Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

CNN has called Nevada for Clinton, Sanders has conceded.

re: CIA vs FBI — it's less that the CIA is full of cartoonish supervillains and more that the two are fundamentally different organizations. The FBI is a law enforcement agency; they're cops with federal jurisdiction, so they deal primarily with US citizens. The CIA is an intelligence agency; they're spies and undercover agents, mostly dealing with foreign nationals of places we're not especially friendly with. It's not a surprise that the way they deal with people and the way they're perceived by the public are different. That said, I'm not whitewashing the shit the CIA gets up to at all — most of the questionable drone strikes are done by them, rather than the military, as the CIA has much looser rules of engagement than the military does. I wouldn't be at all sad to see the CIA become a purely intelligence-gathering organization, without permission to conduct missions or order strikes at all. If they want something done, let them pass their recommendation on to the military and let the military decide what, if any, action to take.
re: polling places — pretty much any building designed to handle a large volume of people and willing to give their space over to the election for the day can and will be used as a polling location. Schools, libraries, and churches are all common for that reason.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
X3 Things is the CIA are crazy even by intelligence agency standard, because the CIA don't just engage in intelligence gathering, they engage in a lot of paramilitary activity, western intelligence agencies general don't get anywhere near as dirty as the CIA.
There's a reason that the CIA have an entire wall in honour of agents who've died in the field, while SIS have never lost an actual agent (though obviously they've had contacts killed).
Actual intelligence agencies tend to send have people working in embassies under diplomatic covers making contacts and sources, the CIA do a lot more then that.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI think it's just that if someone is going to be getting shot at we send the SAS instead of intelligence officers, I know we have crossover between the SAS and SIS, as at least one former SAS officer became an SIS member before going into politics (not that anyone knew about his past for much of his time in politics).

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranTrump has pretty much won South Carolina with over 30% of the vote. That's bad news for Cruz who was probably counting on his Evangelical friends for help.
Rubio seems to have regained his mojo, and is battling Cruz for second place.
I predict Carson will definitely drop out after this. Possibly Kasich as well.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. Why would Kasich care about S.C.? He knows he's going to get trumped in the southern states/bible belt, he's focused on the more moderate states to pull him through.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. If Trump, a rich New York elite and a sham of a Christian, can take the lead in South Carolina, there's a good chance he can muscle out the competition in any other state.
If the Republican establishment wants to stop him, it's gonna take the other candidates dropping out (unlikely Cruz) and their voters rallying behind someone else (likely Rubio).

If he's the nominee we watch him lose the proper election because he's made an enemy of every non white person in the nation.
If he wins then we stock up on food for when martial law is temporarily put into place after his inevitable assassination

Oh really when?Kasich just jumped in the polls. He's now doing better than Bush.
EDIT: Nevermind, Bush caught back up. Kasich is still close though.

I don't how those numbers could even match up with likely voter population. Do you have a source?
