Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A Yeehawd update from my local newspaper:
A federal grand jury in Nevada indicted Cliven Bundy and four others on 16 charges related to an armed standoff near his ranch in 2014 over unpaid grazing fees.

That list for the most part reads like mumbojumbo to me. Good on the abstinence only cut though, while it's not necessarily a bad idea it's not dependable enough to leave other topics off - and most abstinence only ed does not handle these topics at all.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI like this budget or, if you will, Obamafund.
I also approve of the $210 million cut to compensating law enforcement agencies for catching immigrants. Without the financial incentive, maybe they'll be a bit less gung-ho about hunting illegals. Now we just need better programs for legalized immigration, possibly termed "Obamagration".

...That can't have done what standing he has among the religious GOP base any favours.
"Yup. That tasted purple."
Eh, I don't think it's that common of a belief.
Unless you weren't being entirely literal there.
Mind you, this may cost him potential votes from conservative but devout Catholics.
Oh God! Natural light!![]()
But being anti-Catholic (or as some might say, anti-Papist) is more common — but not as much as it was when JFK was elected.

Keep Rolling On
True.
I thought Gorbachev was supposed to the Antichrist, and he just fucked it up.
Oh God! Natural light! To be honest, it legitimately wouldn't surprise me that much if Trump was the anti- Christ.
Then again, he'd be too obvious. He's obviously a diversion for someone else.
Leviticus 19:34We've noted before that Trump doesn't have entirely odious views when you dig beneath the surface. What said digging reveals, instead, is a man who once hobnobbed with Democrats and paid homage to their ideas, and was in most ways politically uncontroversial until he started to run as a Republican, wherein he adopted his current platform of bigotry.
Trump is first and foremost a showman. His career is based on marketing himself. One can make the argument that this populist circus ringmaster is the anti-Republican, but it's hard to attach any religious significance to that fact unless you are way out there.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, just a quick glimpse at Wikipedia suggests a less hardcore Republican then, let's say, Cruz. Not that I want him in office, though.

Oh God! Natural light!Trump gets elected, the country collectively begins to pack its bags for Canada, but then as he's being sworn into office, Trump suddenly rips off his mask and reveals himself to have been Stephen Colbert all this time, taking the piss out of the entire Republican Party.
Canada, meanwhile, contemplates building a wall over its southern border so that they can stop being the emergency evacuation place for American refugees fleeing from the latest election every four years. They're tired of Americans showing up in droves and taking Canadian jobs and abusing Canadian government services.

Will they make the United States pay for it?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesI don't think he really is, but he's much more likely to be than Obama or the Pope. (I seriously doubt the end times will occur within our own life time)
But let's not be silly, it's obvious that your mother-in- law is the real anti-Christ.
Leviticus 19:34I don't even have a mother in law.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesThe greatest victory the Devil ever achieved was convincing the world he didn't exist, Aszur...
Oh God! Natural light!Oh yeah, one thing about actual politics though.
Obama will visit cuba in March, becoming the first president to do so in 88 years

It was the same with Romney. Everyone thought he had a chance because he was the generic Republican.
And then he started talking...
