Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He gets himself possibly on the Court? I admit that this makes no sense.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Aside from doing it as a massive fuck you to the current Republican party, no, I also can think of no reason for Obama to nominate himself, either. But I had to be sure whether it was legally possible for him to do so, as I thought it was.
That and Joe Biden could choose who serves as his vice-president... Remember how Spiro Agnew resigned from the vice-presidency, and Richard Nixon chose Gerald Ford as his new vice-president. Then Nixon resigned, making Gerald Ford President without even being elected.

Back in Oregon, one of the protesters, Shawna Cox, is trying to sue the US government for $666,666,666,666.66 for "suffer[ing] damages from the works of the devil"
. Notably, her lawyer declined to comment or sign that counter-claim.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"![]()
Now, now. You have to sue the devil for that.
So, I'll try to see if I can contact one of his agents. Should I call up Kim Jong-Un, my mother-in-law, or a Copyright lawyer?

Leviticus 19:34There really is a point where I have to wonder how the people themselves don't realize how ridiculous stuff like this is. It seems like they want to be taken seriously but always end up doing it in a way that renders them laughing stocks and they can't take a hint as to how that happens

Now now, dear, you have to sue Satan for those inferred damages. Then you have to complete a case against the very first prosecuting lawyer (if one goes by your belief system), and that's if Old Scratch decides to represent himself in Court.
Keep in mind the Evil Lawyer Joke - Scratch has hundreds of years worth of lawyers down there, lady.
Your great grandkids will be occupying an Oregon building by the time you get past the first five.
This current conflict over the Supreme Court has led to what I think is a rather interesting display, with Colbert interviewing both a Democrat (Cory Booker)
and a Republican (Kasich)
, and both managed to give rather rambling non-answers on the issue. Booker eventually took a stand, but Kasich implicitly continued to toe the party line of "stop Obama at all costs." note
At least Kasich was honest about his "positive" campaign being "most of the things the other guys are saying, but just not being a dick about it." Which I do appreciate and wish was at least the standard for this election cycle, but so far it's not a winning position (among anybody really).

Speaking of frivolous lawsuits, did you ever hear about the guy who sued himself?
He was a prison inmate with access to the law library and far too much time on his hands. His argument was, turning to a life of crime had landed him in jail and thereby deprived himself of the means of earning a living. So he was suing himself for wages lost, compensatory damages, punitive damages, etc. to the tune of umpty-nine million dollars or whatever. And since he was currently in prison and therefore indigent, he wanted the state to pay the damages for him, to himself.
Needless to say, the case didn't get very far in court.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. That's because most of these people are still "unknowns" compared to Clinton. Generic candidate polling is largely meaningless when the public at large remains mostly uninformed, and well-known candidates get the disadvantage because they've been in the media so long they're bound to have some scars.
What that shows is that "Generic Democrat" (Sanders) beats "Generic Republican" (everyone but Trump) by an average of 4%, which is the more valuable data, because advertising and other informational campaigns will level the playing field and make the Generic Republican into a known quantity.

Still seems like a dumb idea though. What would he gain from abdicating to Biden? It's not like Biden is running.
