The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Bernie Sanders drinking game: Every time he mentions a free government program, you drink someone else's beer.

How many beers do I have to steal and drink whenever Cruz or Trump mention a tax cut?

[up][up][up] Holy crap that is some scary stuff, wouldn't that call for outright amending the constitution?

So does that mean that any time Ted Cruz talks about immigration, you have to revoke someone else's beer and give them a frothy mug of water in its place?

Ok

How about we replace his appearances with random Jersey Shore clips?

I would take Trump over Cruz any day of the week. Cruz is the seriously scary one in the race and one who can do serious damage to the country, Trump is just loud and wants to build a fence.

Editorial: Bernie Sanders' ideas are more realistic than Hillary Clinton's

Just so we’re clear: Sanders is an unserious pie-in-the-sky candidate because he wants to rein in campaign spending and institute a health care system that is commonplace in Europe. Clinton, on the other hand, will eradicate sexism and racism in America. Who’s the dreamer here?

I think we're at the point where now every single candidate could be accused of having unrealistic ideas to at least some degree.

Sanders’ platform is as comprehensive as Clinton's. But Bernie has focus. He is animated by the suffering of the vast majority of Americans who are struggling economically. He is no more of a one-note candidate than Bill Clinton was in 1992 when his campaign slogan was, “It's the economy, stupid.” Whereas Hillary is continually reinventing herself and her campaign, throwing things against the wall to see what sticks, Sanders appears to be driven by core values. He’s running because he wants to upend a broken system. She’s running because she thinks it’s her turn.

You guys need to like. Grab Sanders and Clinton. And put them in a machine, Fly style and vote for the resulting abomination of flesh, wild gesticulations, jewish and sex scandal husbandry amalgamations with its own private email server embedded near its heart.

Then vote for that.

Could be worse.

Could be Trump's hair, Cruz' face, Carson's eyes, Jeb's charisma, and Rubio's programming

I would take having my leg cut off over being shot in the face too, but I wouldn't recommend either experience.

I dunno, if you get your leg cut off you could get a robot one later with wifi and stuff.

Which is probably some allegory for the eternal Democrat victory that will happen after a Trump Presidency.

I'd definitely take Cruz over Trump-Trump not only has far-right ideas I dislike, he also has a lot of democratic-ideas I dislike.

He's also the only candidate I would flat out call a terrible person.

[up]I don't think he's ever insulted another candidate for being "ugly". Nor do I think he ever did anything like declare that a reporter was going through PMS. He also never stated that a POW who repeatedly sacrificed for his fellow soldiers wasn't a hero.

He hasn't said the same insults, that is true. But that doesn't mean he hasn't made insults.

On a scale of "You doo-doo head" to "You clotting ocean of rat semen", how important do you deem insults in the political engagement of your country?

I wondery why people can't seem to summon this kind of interest for, say, dams. Or bridges. Or trains.

Dude, train fandom is huge.
