Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Then we could focus on retaking the House if the Presidency is maintained, the Senate is retaken and the Supreme Court tilts left, so there could be a resurgence in progressivism rather than conservatism, since the latter would be horrible.
Although, all bills start in the House, and because of the gerrymandered districts it's likely to be held by the Republicans for some time. Some Supreme Court victories could happen though, such as overturning Citizen's United, upholding Roe and Obergefell, reversing the climate change decision and approving immigration executive action. These cases can't just happen though, people have to make them.

Even if the Republicans loose the Senate it makes sense from their perspective to hold off on a new Supreme Court Judge, if the new judge is approved by a newly Dem Senate then the Republicans can claim that it wasn't their fault and that they stayed pure, while if they compromise then it's their fault.

Nah, I don't think it will be a problem for Republicans to find something to complain about about Lynch. Abortion, same sex marriage, "too close to the President" and who has more can add more.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Loretta Lynch would be an interesting choice, considering how long Republicans held off on approving her for AG, and then that makes Obama have to go through appointing another AG too, so that's two positions the GOP can snarl through the rest of his term.
Unless he's positive they're not going to budge anyway.
SCOTUS doesn't do criminal prosecutions. It's an appelatory court. Just sayin'.

Well, Rubio's a robot. Trump is an evil tribble riding a human-shaped mecha. So I guess it's all even now.

Enough seats in the 2016 Senate map are up in blue-ish states that losing them all (like, you know, from playing games with the Supreme Court) would result in a Democratic majority. If on top of that a Democrat wins the presidential election, then s/he'd be free to appoint a liberal judge (if memory serves, the filibuster deals have choked its effectiveness in presidential nomination confirmations quite a bit) who will then serve for his life in Scalia's place.
