The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's a problem in the UK, Indian actors are offered roles as Muslim terrorists all the time and often not much else.

  • Who do they want before they want an Asian?
  • A Mexican,
  • Who do they want before they want an Asian?
  • A black.
  • Who do they want before they want an Asian?
  • A Persian or a Cajun or an Indian
  • Or an American-Indian played by a Mexican!

Short version is, we're really bad about non-white non-Christian non-heterosexual cultures. Ultimately, a sizable chunk of America really just wants to go back to Fantasy 1950's where gays, black people, and women with opinions didn't exist.

Here's an idea: Ambiguously Brown Muhammad Ramadan grows up in the UK, has an extremely sucky life where everything screams at him to become a terrorist, and obliviously carries on having an incredibly average, boring, mundane life. Then he dies during a terrorist attack. Of a heart stroke.

Many of the things that should shape him to become a terrorist would be extremely Western, British things. Loyalty to the ingroup no matter what the rules say. Stiff upper lip. Tall poppy syndrome. Violence against him done in the name of British values and cultural purity. This Is England, Muhammad, don't you know?

All Middle Eastern and North African people are officially listed as "white" by the US census.

Yeah in the US Asian means East Asian, which is weird for countries where the most common Asians are South Asians, even countering Arabs.

[up] Which is weird, as the US actually has one of the most limiting definitions of "white" around, considering people of Iberian decent to not be white, I belive in the early US even the French weren't considered white.

[up]Pretty sure the only predominantly English-speaking countries where that's the case is the UK and maybe Ireland. In the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, "Asian" usually means "East Asian."

[up] "Asians" also mean Southeast Asians in English-speaking countries, not just East Asians. Don't know about Central Asians, though, who also generally look like East or Southeast Asians.

And then there is the Caucasus, where the majority of the population are white, but they are Asian countries.

@ Bat: Depends. In British terminology, when it comes to South East and East Asia people are referred (if at all) by which country their ancestors came from.

[up][up] That depends on how you define Europe, I've seen Georgia included as part of Europe before.

[up] Well as from a country in the region, not everyone bothers to learn to difference and Pakistanis and Indians being mixed up is a thing.

There is a difference between what the documents in the US Social Services claim is white and what the US society claim is white.

I've been through there, officially on the temporary SSN I had I was listed as Caucasian instead of Latino, but still for a lot of American's I wouldn't be considered white.

By the way, Hollywood needs to stop pretending Washington D.C., New York City and Los Angeles are the only places in the US. I know Washington is the Capital, New York City is the largest city, and they are already in California so Los Angeles is easy to film in, but it would be nice to see more variety. Occasionally we'll get Chicago or Philadelphia, but that's about it.

San Francisco gets a fair amount of camera time, as well. But nobody ever sets a movie in, say, Pittsburgh.

Don't forget Seattle.

Also (tinyurl is not working for me right now so no link) Lindsey Graham is making noises about shooting for a consensus candidate. I think he rightly fears that if a Supreme Court seat is in play during the election, things are going to tilt Dem-ward because Citizens United is so hated (and because it'd be yet another example of Republican dysfunction for Sanders or Clinton to run against), so going for a moderate is the Republicans' best shot.

He himself is saying that he doesn't think the Republicans are going to win the election regardless.

Atlanta/GA as a whole is getting more coverage thanks to it being friendly to filming economically (and with Walking Dead, it only increases popularity). For a about a decade, Miami got all the filming love.

Blame your movie producers for catering foreign audiences who wouldn't know more than a handful of US cities by name.

San Fran, NY, Texas, LA, Washington, Florida because Disney, Miami, Detroit, Chicago and maybe Boston or New Jersey are the most known US cities abroad.

San Diego is nicer anyway.

Anyway, I just recently learned that even though 28% of Nevada's population is Latino, only 12% of Nevadan voters are. There a lot of young, unregistered, and/or undocumented Latinos there.
