Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.I mean, Scalia was a shit justice by any metric except for a right-wing partisan. His own opinions were often inconsistent or read on the level of "old man yells at cloud," and he did preside over some nasty decisions. I don't think talking about him going to hell is appropriate, but aside from the fact that he was a person with loved ones (guy had nine children apparently), there's not much to be missed from this. No doubt 100 years from now they'll look at his opinions as "what not to do" in a constitutional law class, if they don't already.
I liked him better than Clarence Thomas, but yeah...
Still it feels weird to see him go, his recognizable mug was always one of the first things I thought of when I imagined the Supreme Court.

Some people's minds ought not to speak, certainly not as a member of the highest court in the land.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I saw a hilarious suggestion ... that, should the Senate block all nominees that Obama puts forward, that Hillary or Bernie (whichever wins) should then turn around and nominate Obama himself for the empty seat. There's even precedent for a President to then move on to SCOTUS after their term. And he studied Constitutional law, so he's qualified!
@Balmung It's simple: to find the best examples of any kind of arglefargle or applesauce, seek out the land of jiggery pokery. There, magical faeries tend apple orchards under a biiiiiiig rainbow, while men marry horses and dogs slow dance with cats to Jazz standards and sip imported French wine.

That last one is positively enraging.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once.""The body of scientific evidence supporting creation science is as strong as that supporting evolution." - Antonin Scalia
"If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder?" - Antonin Scalia
"I'm just not impressed by the fact the University of Texas may have fewer [blacks]. Maybe it ought to have fewer. I don't think it stands to reason that it's a good thing for the University of Texas to admit as many blacks as possible." - Antonin Scalia
"There are those who contend that it does not benefit African Americans to get them into the University of Texas where they do not do well, as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school, a slower-track school where they do well," - Antonin Scalia
"This Court has never held that the Constitution forbids the execution of a convicted defendant who has had a full and fair trial but is later able to convince a habeas court that he is “actually” innocent. Quite to the contrary, we have repeatedly left that question unresolved, while expressing considerable doubt that any claim based on alleged “actual innocence” is constitutionally cognizable." - Antonin Scalia
Let's dispel once and for all this notion that we should Never Speak Ill of the Dead. The country's a better place without him.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.Apparently CNN, in its endless race to get ahead of a story before it's even started, believes Sri Srinivasan
to be the most likely nominee for the seat left vacant by Scalia.
On the topic of Clarence Thomas, who will he be following most-closely now that Scalia's dead?
Given that he got confirmed to his current position with a unanimous vote in the Senate, I can kinda see why. It'd be an easy way to paint Republicans as the "Party of No" again for doing such a massive 180 in just 3 years time.

desi priiiiide! <pump fist>
So I just watched the debate. Woooooooooooooow. Carson's lines were glorious. Using fake Stalin quotes, saying he is not a politician and never will be, Trump losing his temper, Jeb doing well, Kasich kasiching, Cruz kinda quiet. Rubio the robot actually bounced back though so boo.

Well, that's interesting. Makes sense that they'd concentrate resources and staff where they perceived the most threat, but that's certainly a large disparity between the Sanders and Clinton camps in South Carolina. http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/warning-signs-hillary-clinton-south-carolina
I watched a good chunk of it, and here's my thoughts:
Trump is an asshole.
Jeb struck me as pretty reasonable; I almost wish he had a chance at becoming Pres.
There's something about Carson that makes me uncomfortable. It's like watching that guy speak in front of class who has horrible stage fright-it's a little painful to watch.
Rubio bouncing back is good. If we ever get attacked by aliens, our robot president can fry them with his heat-ray vision. But seriously, I was worried there a second.

Leviticus 19:34

The government ceasing to be able to provide functions is, after all, a Republican objective.
