The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The one thing I can give her props for was the fact that she handled Trump's bullying really well.

And now Fiorina's gone.

And then there were 7.

This good news for Bush, Rubio, and Kasich. Now the race to be the establishment candidate has narrowed down to a 3-way competition.

Meanwhile the Trump/Cruz rivalry gets uglier. Case in point:

Such bold claims shouldn't go baseless. Please find a credible source that explains exactly how Sanders backpedeled from his numbers.
Did you actually read my post?
They're also apparently malleable. When I pointed out that the yearly savings numbers they were presenting on prescription drugs were literally impossible, the Sanders camp revised the number to $241 billion — huge and arguably implausible but not larger than total annual spending on prescription drugs. A follow-up email also revised down the assumed administrative savings from 16 percent to 13 percent.

Ah, very well, that is what I shall focus on then. Saying things are physically impossible without explaining why they're physically impossible isn't very helpful of a citation
Which is a bigger number, 305 or 324?

Furthermore, your claim that Sanders hired economists to analyze the plan in his favor rings hollow in the light of Thrope's explicit ties to the Clintons.
It's not a claim, it's a fact, seeing as these "economists" couldn't find such basic errors. You're just mimicking Gunnels in going ad hominem on Thorpe.

Do you support the TPP?
Do you support withdrawing from the WTO? Or creating another credit bubble? Or instituting protectionist tariffs? Do you buy into the lump of labor fallacy? Do you disregard two decades of economists repeating over and over that free trade is a good idea?

You say that like it's one of the questions where answering yes automatically means you are worthless as a person, like "do you molest puppies" or "are you a racist."
I would ask Lum if he has stopped beating his wife, but I know he hasn't.sad

So should we start placing bets on who will drop out next? I've got 10 schmekels on Rubio.

I honestly couldn't tell you. Rubio and Bush both seem too stubborn to quit, and Kasich isn't going to pull out right after finishing second in NH against expectations. And I think Carson is just too clueless to consider quitting.

Did you actually read my post?

A source other than the one you keep tossing around like it's the Bible. More than one source, please.

Which is a bigger number, 305 or 324?

Irrelevant to my question. Source or no source? If you have no source, I am not sure how you're going to convince me.

It's not a claim, it's a fact, seeing as these "economists" couldn't find such basic errors. You're just mimicking Gunnels in going ad hominem on Thorpe.

So it is a fact that Kenneth Thorpe is hired by Clinton. Noted.

Do you support withdrawing from the WTO? Or creating another credit bubble? Or instituting protectionist tariffs? Do you buy into the lump of labor fallacy? Do you disregard two decades of economists repeating over and over that free trade is a good idea?

I believe I asked you a question first. It's improper to respond with more questions. Do you support the TPP?

Hey, did someone here ask about the Nevada prediction polls? Here's the 538 prediction as of February 9:

Five Thirty Eight polling averages as of Feb. 9

Nevada:

Clinton: 50.3

Sanders: 28.1

South Carolina

Clinton: 60.5

Sanders: 29.3

A source other than the one you keep tossing around like it's the Bible. More than one source, please.
Sorry, that's not how it works. You can't ignore a source just because you don't like what it says.

Irrelevant to my question. Source or no source?
I do have a source, in the form of Bernie's policy director backpedaling and revising his numbers after they're shown to be impossible. Unless you think Vox is just lying and quoting stuff that they never said, you have no argument. You're just trying to ignore the source because apparently figuring out 324 > 305 is hard.

If you have no source, I am not sure how you're going to convince me.
I don't really care about convincing you. I care about making your stance look ignorant to other viewers.

I believe I asked you a question first. It's improper to respond with more questions.
It is also improper to ask loaded questions to distract from the fact that you have no argument.

Rubio only has one more chance to prove himself. Christie may be gone, but Cruz is a noted good debater and Trump is Trump. So he won't drop until after SC, and that too only if he does badly (which, in my opinion, is likely).

Gilmore will stay as long as he has money to spend. He clearly doesn't give a damn that he is losing.

Carson is interesting. Clearly it will be SC that he makes his final stand, but his campaign is already in such disarray, I wonder if he'll give up or if he hates Cruz enough to stick in there just to spite Ted of an easy victory.

In which case, I hope he sticks around...
