Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sometimes when I see people rooting for Trump or Cruz, Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy sets in and I almost hope they win so when they completely ruin everything and repeat everything Bush did, I can tell people "I told you so."
But that's petty.

Nothing personal against you, but I DESPISE that line of thinking. I heard it a lot back in high school when a lot of smug faux-anarchists who wore trenchcoats talked a lot about how they just wanted to watch everything burn to the ground to see humankind's ~true nature~ or something like that.
Which isn't what you're saying, of course, but it bothers me all the same. America might not be great right now (is any country?), but it is worth protecting from the likes of Trump and Cruz. (Oh, you said that it was petty. My bad, didn't wanna go off on you.
I dislike this line of thought, as well. If we look at politics like that, we'll all be even more miserable, and I for one don't need to be more miserable.

I would not lie and say that I have not occasionally shared that sentiment. "If these people are so determined to burn the world, let 'em. Serves us right for electing such assholes."
But then I remember that we'd be throwing away so much progress, so much that is good. Things move forward only if we make them; the idea that there is a "steady march of progress" is just plain wrong. There is only the progress that we make happen.
Think about all the undeserving people we would be condemning to suffer.

You and Lennik should go to a private chatroom. It would be rather amusing to Pass the Popcorn. However, that tone isn't helping.

x4 Is there some feud I'm involved in that I don't know about?
But in all seriousness, I think it's a normal reaction to momentarily have when you're constantly watching people root for candidates who have said truly awful things about certain groups of Americans, and you're so far to the other side of that issue that you just think everyone else is out of their minds to be willing to vote for the candidate you think is abhorrent.
But as I said, it's momentary, and after just a moment it sets in that the candidate in question winning would cause great harm to other people, and you remember they don't deserve to be hurt by a policy just because you're frustrated. So of course I don't actually believe that, ideologically, but that sentiment is there.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.So you can probably expect him to drop out by the end of the week.
Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Christ Christie should drop out. He's become a much more hostile ideologue in recent years. Remember when he shook Obama's hand in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and refused to play partisan politics? Contrast that with all the trash he's talked about the president since entering the race. Politics changes people for the worse.
That's right, boys. Mondo cool.Aww, but then Christie will have to cancel his appearances in South Carolina and Nevada. All that scheduling and devotion from his campaign staff wasted. /sigh
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Paid internships are a thing, at least in theory. College students and recent grads pass on blurry photographs and accounts of the time some cousin's neighbor's coworker totally saw one, they swear.
Depends a lot on your field. In computer science, internships are usually well paid.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayPolling puts Sanders as being at a disadvantage there and the media will rip him to shreds if he doesn't do something to win over minority voters.
On the other hand, he does still poll pretty well with young Hispanic and African American voters (not as nearly well as with young Whites, but he still leads Hillary in that area.)

Nevada is 11 days away; South Carolina 18. Since Sanders splits the Latino vote with Clinton and carries 1/3 the black vote, I think there's plenty of time to make headway.
Coming within 20 points of Clinton in South Carolina would be enough to continue the campaign.

Mathematically defeated?
Alright, someone call Sanders. I'm challenging him to a game of 24!
Leviticus 19:34

Cruz IS worse than Trump, because he's actually smart and actually has a chance, however remote. Trump's been made enough of a laughingstock as is, but I don't think that enough people know about how toxic Cruz is outside of Washington.
