The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]111471 It's now 39-58. Similar to Iowa, Sanders is gaining strength as the counting goes on. He may make it to a 20 point win yet.

Damn, Rubio really imploded after the last debate.

Why the fuck is it possible that Trump can be a serious candidate.

Because there are a lot of scared and angry people out there, the world as they know it really is falling apart, and they desperately want someway or someone to deal with it. And he's a strong white independent man who don't need no establishment!

Additionally because the Republicans have so many candidates and the rest of the non-Trump votes are split so many ways.

Republicans could solidify behind a candidate. There's nothing stopping Trump, or Cruz, or Rubio from hitting 60 percent. There is just not nearly enough unity within the base as to what they want. There is no longer a lockstep voting bloc; the fragile alliance of movement conservatism is gone.

I don't comprehend how anyone even defend America anymore when Trump is seriously doing the best of the Republican candidates.

Why the fuck is it possible that Trump can be a serious candidate.

For the same reason that Ah-Nuld became Der Governator. Name recognition, celebrity status, fame (or infamy, it amounts to the same thing, really.) In short, a lot of voters are mindless fanboys, alas. "Vote the name you know!"

Personally, I suspect that some people voted for Schwarzenegger purely as a joke. Then, when the results were announced, they were gob-smacked: "He fucking WON??"

[up] I have to agree there. The demographics do not look good for Bernie in South Carolina, et. al.

Reacting to NH as if it's a defeat for her campaign is a serious mistake for Clinton. She knew going in that it was a long shot.
Indeed. She could have taken a page from Bill's book.

Why the fuck is it possible that Trump can be a serious candidate.
He's a nativist populist in the same mold as Paul/Nader/Kucinich/Sanders. If you tell people that you'll give them everything they want, while punishing the bad guys who are responsible for [problem] (bad guys usually being "the establishment" + foreigners) then you'll get at least some people listening to you. It doesn't matter if what you're saying makes zero sense as long as it's what some pissed off people want to be true.

It helps that half of his opponents (Rubio, Bush, Carson) really sound like they don't want to be there. At least Trump is animated.

I think that Gilmore is going to drop after this. And holy shit, you know that Rubio is fucked when Cruz is beating him in New Hampshire.

If enough of them drop out, Kasich might have something of a prayer. But only if Bush and Rubio go relatively quickly and I don't see that happening.

Anyone else find it ironic that Bill Clinton of all people was criticizing Bernie's supporters as being sexist?

[up] Well he only got a blow job from a women, it's not as if he though of her as an inferior or anything. Though as I remember hearing it the Democratic defense of him consisted a lot of slut shaming Ms Lewinsky, and a number of other women who came forward against him.

I know. Johnson thought with his, well, Johnson, FDR cheated on Eleanor with his cousin, Harding may have been killed by his mistress and fostered an illegitimate child, etc. Clinton just stands out because he's still alive and is in more recent memory.

Well it looks like Rubio manged to make it past the 10% threshold, but he's still stuck in 5th place.

I expect to Carson drop out soon. My earlier prediction of him making it to Super Tuesday was too generous.

Bernie Sanders is the only presidential candidate who pays his interns.

Some think that Carson might hold out until S.Carolina, due to the large African American population there. Of course, the majority of them are Democrats so he's screwed. Its just a case of how much money he wants to waste on a charade.

What a switch. I was so ready to vote for Hillary, but the Internet seems to want me to vote Bernie. But it's only going to matter which one the Democrats pick first, won't it?

I don't think I can vote Republican. They've never done much I've valued.
