The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Nope they've finally got the candidate numbers down enough that they can fit them all on one stage.
Specifically the RNC said they wouldn't be doing anymore kiddy table/undercard debates, and it basically culled the field of the hanger-ons, or will be after New Hampshire, most likely.

Rubio is like a living human glitch. Everything he said was on repeat.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

Hillary Clinton issues challenge to name one instance where Wall Street money changed her. Elizabeth Warren takes it up.

Yay waterboarding! Trump for president!

I wonder how South Park could make fun of a guy like that. How do you even exaggerate Donald Trump?

I think they might just roll with their scientology approach. Show his actual opinions and flash "this is what Trump actually believes"

Hard to do, see Trump vs Trump in Colbert's. But the niche is already filled by Mr. Garrison.

Clinton sarcastically says on ABC that she'll release her speech transcripts when "everyone else does first."

That's totally fair in my eyes; almost every bigwig in politics/culture/business gives private speeches. Unless they do something criminal in there, they are under no (legal) obligation to tell anyone. Though in the era of cell phones, almost anything can be made public; Romney learned that the hard way.

[up]The only other candidate running among the Democrats is Sanders. He's already released his speech transcripts—he donated all $3,000 to charity.

[up]O'Malley dropped out after getting 0.5% in Iowa and endorsed Sanders a few days later.

[up][up]I meant in politics as a whole, Sanders is an outlier. And he himself has said that he doesn't think Clinton has to release her scripts. He's free to trumpet the fact that he's transparent on this front; but I don't think he sees much benefit in hammer Clinton's record here. He's better off staying on message.

Yeah. Ordinarily, I'd say that Sanders was being too nice by not slinging a little mud, but the fact is that Clinton's had far worse than mud slung at her and she's evolved a Teflon coating in the eyes of her broad support base.

I continue to hope for a brokered Republican convention, though. (No longer possible on the Democratic side, clear two-horse race.)

Well, it looks like Trump is set to win NH, so he's still viable for now.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/nh/new_hampshire_republican_presidential_primary-3350.html

Trump having lots of delegates is the only way the Convention is brokered, everyone else will likely do backroom deals (which means that Rubio gets the nod and Cruz probably gets the VP slot, unless Kasich rallies big time).

@Rationalinsanity: If Trump loses a brokered convention due to a superdelegate revolt in favor of that broken robot Rubio, he will go third-party and I won't blame him a bit.

Rubio is done. The establishment isn't going to break for him now. One of the governors will do at least okay in NH to stick around while at least one will leave, but whichever governor survives NH is going to become the establishment pick.

EDIT- On the polls, I'd wait til the samples come from after yesterday. Which might not be enough time given that its tomorrow, but hey...

[up][up]Not sure. He may well get #2 in NH, which will keep him as Establishment Man due to the lack of anyone else being able to hold it.

Of the governors, Christie is the only one who I think might surge back. Bush is a zombie.

It's Kasich who is polling better than either one, and Christie is far enough behind (moreso than Bush) that he'd be lucky to remain viable after NH. Rubio's momentum has halted and before Iowa he kept getting lost in the crowd.

After her comments were met with backlash, Steinem issued a statement via Facebook on Sunday.

"In a case of talk-show Interruptus, I misspoke on the Bill Maher show recently, and apologize for what’s been misinterpreted as implying young women aren’t serious in their politics. What I had just said on the same show was the opposite: young women are active, mad as hell about what’s happening to them, graduating in debt, but averaging a million dollars less over their lifetimes to pay it back. Whether they gravitate to Bernie or Hillary, young women are activist and feminist in greater numbers than ever before."

Steinem apologizes for implying women back Sanders to meet men

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton still places first in the caucuses with 700.47 state delegate equivalents, or 49.84 percent, the party said in a statement.

Primary rival Bernie Sanders comes in second with 696.92 state delegate equivalents, or 49.59 percent.

The total net change gives Sanders an additional 0.1053 state delegate equivalents and strips Clinton of 0.122 state delegate equivalents.
