The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]You honestly think one needs to be biased to suspect that Hillary's going to 180 (again) and push the TPP if she makes office?

I can barely keep track of who hates Hillary and who hates Bernie in this thread. It's becoming something of a circus.

[up][up][up]Again. Do you really think one needs to hate Hillary in order to suspect, based on her political past and the huge amount of contribution money she's been taking in, that she's not going to switch gears and push for the TPP if she reaches the oval office?

I begrudgingly support Hil for her foreign policy, but don't like her. I like Sanders, but can't bring myself to support his policies when there are so many unanswered questions and assumptions.

I doubt she'll agree to TPP outright, but I could see her agreeing to a deal very much like like the TPP if pressure isn't kept on her.

The FEC has asked Ted Cruz for more detail about loans his 2012 Senate campaign received from Goldman Sachs and Citibank.

I wonder if Jeb is trying to be funny or if he's just that disillusioned with his campaign. Either way, it sounded like something out of a satire at this point.

Probably Both.

I almost feel sorry for him.

Why are Americans so Angry? Surprisingly African Americans are the least angry group polled. I do wonder if our famous national sense of optimism will ever recover, or even if it should be allowed to recover.

Pretty much this. I'll probably wind up voting for Hillary in the primary due to said unanswered questions and magic asterisks. That said, I'd vote for either of them over any member of the GOP circus.

After the US has come so far in negotiating the treaty I can't imagine Hillary will be able to bring herself not to sign the thing. Probably her preferred goal will be for Obama to shove the thing down Congress's throat before she take office, I'm sure she is using all her influence behind the scenes to make it happen.

[up][up]I'll back you up with some evidence.

Here are some of the other words Clinton used to describe the TPP before she left the State Department in 2013: "exciting," "innovative," "ambitious," "groundbreaking," "cutting-edge," "high-quality" and "high-standard." (To read more of her comments in full, check out our previous article on this subject.)

I mean she could have changed her opinion, but still...

It's rather bad form to make people find the proof for your own argument, though. That seems to be at least part of Fighteer's issue here. If you make the statement, provide the proof for your point.

[up]I was trying to make the point that the knowledge concerning Clinton's sudden shift in opinion is prevalent enough that the notion that you'd have to be biased or a "hater" to suspect Hillary might not be entirely forthcoming about her (current) stance on the TPP is rather puzzling. But I see what you mean.

"before she left the state department" is the key word when putting Clinton's support for TPP in context. The Obama Administration was and remains 100% behind it. No administration, no lockstep messaging.
