Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Random, but worrisome thought of the moment...
Anyone here familiar with the US version of House of Cards showing on Netflix? And how it's going to get a new season this upcoming March, with it's viral marketing campaign being that Frank Underwood is "running" in this 2016 Presidential election? Are you familiar with his general character, and how he's a murderous sociopath who will stop at NOTHING to make a legacy for himself at any costs, even if he has to wreck the American government?
...Why am I beginning to see WAAAY too many parallels to a fake monster of a character versus Trump and certain other GOP candidates? And even worse, why the hell are so many idiots on the Facebook comments section actually wishing for Frank to be a real-world candidate!?!
Sorry, just needed to get that thought off of my chest.
EDIT: Could've sworn Lindsey Graham was the first GOP candidate to say something to that effect.

Which isn't a popular sentiment. America is tired of war. Carpet bombing is disturbingly popular partly because it's an easy "blow up the bad guys and go home." Boots on the ground mean family members going off to die.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.
I'm beginning to think that if Vladimir Putin were to ever try and run for the Presidency with the GOP, he might actually have better odds of winning than Trump, non-American background included...
Hell, that actually makes for a pretty fun thought experiment. Since the appeal of Trump's ramblings is essentially how he's promising to "Make America great again" by targeting unpopular minorities (the gays, chechens/muslims, hispanics), becoming a tough guy again on the world stage, and supposedly solving all of these political issues magically, Putin seriously would fit in pretty well with the GOP's rhetoric. Heck, he'd even be more saner and rational. Yeah he'd ultimately fail in the real world on the grounds that he'd be tarred as a Communist infiltrator out to destroy our way of life and freedoms, but he matches the party line in almost every other way.
Oh, if only the GOP recognized that for themselves...

Florida also existed as a British colony at the time, but was not one of the 13 colonies because it didn't join in on the American Revolution. (It went back and forth between the British and the Spanish before becoming an American territory and, eventually, state.)

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if for a lot of people, they were holding out on giving Sanders money until he proved he was more than a crazy chance.
Incidentally, I've heard apparently Hillary spent a buttload more of money than Sanders did, and well, got the same results, essentially.
Plus minus the coin tosses.
From what I can find, Rubio has narrowly beat Sanders in early polls,
and also beating Clinton.
Biden is a superstar, man, he's the Malcolm Tucker of the Democrat Party!
Or am I confusing him with someone else? Who in Obama's cabinet is known for hyperagressive policits and lots of swearing?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Student in Texas campus asks students questions like "Who won the Civil War".
You have some Black students who answered "The Confederates?"
????!!!!
You had another asking if it was in 1965 (they're confusing with Civil Rights?)
That's only one of the examples. Others don't know who the VP is or who Texas gained independence from, but that's slightly less mind-boggling.
I'm now less surprised that rednecks would use the Conflag without a thought to its connotations when there are black Pol Sci students that don't know who won the Civil War.
Everyone knows who Snooki is, though. Personally, I only know of her because of South Park, and all I know is she wants snu snu.

I think they all backed carpet bombing, endorsing war crimes and tourture are pretty much a requirement at this point.
