Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Josef Stalin also had a funny little mustache.
Russia has scars from WWII to this very day due to the sheer number of casualties it took defending against Germany. The Eastern Front made the death toll from the Western Front look like a Sunday picnic. Despite what they say, out of national amour propre no doubt, I wonder if it would have gone so well for them had Hitler not divided his attention.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Damn, this thread moved fast. Not gonna read all that. Anyway, my friends, [distant] family, acquaintances, etc., many of whom are Sanders supporters, are now throwing out a combination of the following statements following last night:
- Clinton cheated (by far the most common).
- He'll just do way better in other states (even though Iowa is young, white, middle class, and liberal- pretty much the base of his support, besides factory workers/unionists).
- Iowa doesn't matter (after talking about how much it mattered in the previous weeks).
- Polls showing Sanders unpopular among black and Latino voters are lies.
- If those polls are proven not to be lies, black/Latino voters are just ignorant and would side with Sanders if they knew more about what he stands for.
- He almost tied which is just as good as winning.
So roughly what I expected.
I recommend "Stumbling Colossus" by David Glantz. It's about how woefully unprepared the USSR's military was for the Germans in 1941, despite the leadership's best attempts to prepare, to the point that it was impossible to prepare any faster.
[Also Japan isn't real]
American Lend-Lease supplied the following goods to the USSR, per the numbers by Sokolov and by Harrison:
- 58% of the USSR's high octane aviation fuel
- 33% of their motor vehicles (66% of their heavy haul logistics trucks)
- 53% of expended ordinance (artillery shells, mines, assorted explosives)
- 30% of military aircraft
- 93% of railroad equipment (locomotives, freight cars, wide gauge rails, etc.)
- 50-80% of rolled steel, cable, lead, and aluminium
- 43% of garage facilities (building materials & blueprints)
- 12% of tanks and SP Gs
Germany was devoting between 40-50% of its resources on fronts other than the east, in the years of 1943-1945. Looking at the number of deaths is also misleading when determining who inflicted the most casualties. You also must look at the number of prisoners of war, and the amount of lost materiel. The units in the Western and Mediterranean fronts were disproportionately stacked with vehicles relative to number of personnel. Partly because a lot of them were Luftwaffe or Kriegsmarine.

It is said to be the result of a societal collapse during a war while humans were still earthbound. When the veterans of the war returned and were not being treated well by their government they formed a coup and then limited the vote to veterans only in the new government.

(Incidentally, which was won by Sanders. Which would more or less outright tie.)
And Hillary DID win 3 Precincts literally by Coin Toss.

I heard of three myself, wouldn't be surprised if it was more.
I will note that the understaffing at those Precincts however, does sound awfully sketchy as hell to someone suspicious of things.

Clearly they're Wall Street plants.
On a more serious note:

You just summed up the frontpage of r/Politics

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.6 coin tosses - Ames, Newton, West Branch, Davenport, and two in Des Moines - all won by Clinton.
They had to toss coins because there was a virtual tie of votes but an odd number of county delegates, so one candidate had to lose a delegate to the other in each case, and the official state rules say to use a coin toss for the odd delegate.
So why the hell is everyone saying that this means Sanders is done for? If anything, the fact that they came so close and that Clinton literally had luck on her side because of a coin toss should be a teeth-gnashing headache for her campaign. Besides, Sanders is still doing remarkably well in NH.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."People are reactionary nincompoops. More specifically, this is part of the media tendency to jump on a trend, any trend, as a focal point
, and use it to make sweeping pronouncements.
Realistically, Sanders was hoping to win Iowa in order to have any chance of buffering against the Southern states that will almost surely be won by Clinton. He needs to capture a majority of young, white, male Democrats, ironically enough.
The virtual tie that occurred may help boost his credibility as a national candidate, but unless he enjoys a huge boom among minority voters in the next few weeks or months, it's a bad sign for him.
