The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.

What other method is there? We've twice had a district council's control be decided by the cutting of a pack of cards.

The other option is to let the neutral person running the vote cast a deciding vote, which has a ton of issues of its own.

Which can't happen in a primary/caucus because the state does not run these things. All powah to the party. And in this case, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Or should I start calling her Boss Debbie now?

Well, the candidates bucked things enough that they got more debates on the schedule, I think.

Anyway, when you have a short time limit on things I guess a coin flip is a lot faster and more efficient that going through a run off sort of thing. Not that I really think a run off would have changed many minds in this case; O'malley doesn't appear to have had enough supporters to have effected things either way once he quit and they had to choose someone else.

[up][up]Boss Schultz. Didn't they go by surnames? Eh. I'll be glad when she's been gotten rid of either by being chased out at the next party chair election or effectively getting kicked upstairs in the wake of a Clinton victory. ...Or did Obama appoint her?

[up][up]He should have quit in December (instead of taking a half a million dollar loan). Then those 8 votes would be distributed among the other two.

[up]I wonder who would be party chair after her.

Poor O'Malley. Not even a single delegate.

I guess he's the stand in for Peter Florrick in our universe.

90 Iowa precincts were not properly staffed by DNC officials, so their caucus results cannot be confirmed. That's 5% of the vote.

Maybe they'll settle with 90 coin tosses?

This is...unexpected. When Hillary gets a single-delegate advantage by coin flip, it's safe to say that Sanders has the momentum, especially since NH is predicted to be in Bernie's bag.

Meanwhile, the Republican establishment now has a clear call: they need to get their collective thumb out of their butt and get the dollars flowing to Rubio, who can use them far better than Bush. And I'll say this: if Rubio manages to take the nomination, I won't cheer, but I'll applaud him and the RNC for a storm well-weathered..

Delegates. It's all about the delegates.

Each state gets a number of delegates, who go to whomever the state majority votes. Whoever gets more delegates wins the election.

That's why a president can be elected without the actual majority vote, though it's unlikely. The big tickets states are California and Texas. Texas always goes Republican (36 Delegates) and California always goes Democrat (53).

After that it's about winning the states with the largest number of Delegates to try and create a majority. The number break down is like so.

It's why Republicans depend so much on the rural country White voters, who tend to be ignorant and racist. The Republicans have spent decades playing to that and it's part of why Trump is so out of control.

So correct me if I am wrong, but now that it's done, we won't hear about Iowa again for three years and a half, right? Unless it is also the first state to give results during the election?

Since 2008, we hear a lot about the primaries over here, and it really looks like the US just cannot not make a huge show of everything. However, in 2008 and 2012 it still was a political show, but this year, it looks like a TV series, especially on the GOP side. It's almost a live soap opera.

Theoretically, yes, no more talk about Iowa. Instead it switches to talk about Hampshire, and less excitement.

Iowa is the first ten minutes of the race, and thus gets much acclaim, the middle petters out till the end where acclaim spikes again.

[up][up][up][up]it doesn't, in the end a candidate with more money and connections can beat the democratic system, don't forget Al Gore got more votes than Bush Jr. and LOST the election because Bush used his family contacts to rig the Florida election

If the Notorious H.R.C eventually takes the nomination, I predict an outpouring of salty Reddit tears the likes of which I haven't seen since the No vote in the Scottish independence referendum.

Tumblr belongs to Bernie Sanders, if you want to talk political stances of general internet sites.

...honestly if it were up to the internet with each site having their own delegates I am completely unsure who would side with who.

Reddit loves Bernie Sanders as well. Seriously, Reddit's demographic is the male, middle-class college students - 'brogressives' - who make up the bulk of Bernie's support.

I don't know about that: from the polls I've been reading most Bernie supporters are College students, but vary more heavily than you imply. I've seen strong numbers of women, Po C, LGBT folk.
