Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Good speech from Bernie. He got going toward the end, but he sounds kind of hoarse.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Apparently according to ABC News, his number of followers on Facebook just fucking skyrocketed tonight.
There is going to be a big, if short-lived furor over the Clinton campaign's premature declaration of victory in Iowa. She studiously avoided declaring the win in her speech.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Hell, if anything, Rubio is the huge winner in Iowa. I don't think anyone expected him to do so well. His campaign just got fresh legs.

He's a winner by virtue of staying under the radar. He no longer has that particular advantage. Trump focused on Cruz for the last month, and before that was attacking everyone else in about equal measure. Now that he's getting more prominent, the hairdo and Cruz both will go hard after them.

The caucus, as I understand it, allots delegates to the party's nominating convention later in the year. The delegates cast the actual votes for the candidates.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Oh wow, yeah, Rubio got a shit ton of delegates.
Guess the establishment isn't as fucked as it thought. I mean, last time, SANTORUM won Iowa, and look what it got him. Rubio definitely outperformed my expectations. Guess he'll probably get the nomination, assuming the establishment can dethrone Trump and Cruz.
Rubio is a lot more viable than Trump and Cruz during the general; enough that I wouldn't chance Sanders against him. Though he is still quite exposed to attack and his Tea Party quackery should turn off the swing vote.
Also, just saw that O'Malley has suspended his campaign.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. If Rubio can be the bridge between the Tea Party and the Establishment; he might just take that nomination.
But Shinra has a good point, if Rubio isn't able to handle being attacked he'll crumble like Carson.
Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. The danger with Rubio is that he would allow the moderates who are utterly disgusted with Cruz and Trump to swing back to the Republican fold rather than stay home or vote Sanders as a protest.

You could find my posts in this thread with a Google site search, but how you'd narrow it down to my mega-posts on the political environment, I have no idea, other than a page-by-page search. I could try to come up with something tomorrow.
I'll believe that when I see the whites of its eyes, to mix a metaphor. It's cheap and easy to call fraud when a vote is close.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"More GOP Delegates have been awarded.
Ted Cruz - 8
King Trump - 7
Marco Rubio - 7 (+1)
Ben Carson - 3 (+1)
Rand Paul - 1
Jeb Bush - 1 (+1)
Looks like Jeb got one after all. Now all the millions of dollars spent were worth it in the end.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Well, I haven't been watching this very long tonight (was with my brother and his brand new baby for most of the evening) but wow. This Clinton/Sanders thing. I don't think I've heard of something being this close since I started paying attention to politics.
Also the coin flip thing appears to be legal? The explanation Kornacki gave was... not in any way understandable to me?
Coin flips are the international way of deciding in equal vote situations, that or drawing straws.
You think it's something when this is decided by a coin flip? Parliamentary seats have gone to coin flips.
We've twice had control of the same district council decided by cutting a pack of cards over here.
