Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm hoping for Hillary v Trump, since that's most likely to put a democrat in the white house.
Also, Bloomberg would be an idiot if he ran.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI'm hoping for a Hillary v Rubio run, since Rubio's the guy I'm planning to vote for. And if he doesn't win, well, things won't be that much worse under Hillary.

Leviticus 19:34I'll accept TPP if it means we get some other stuff done, and Hillary recently came out against it, anyway. And, oh, my gods, would you cut it out with the hysteria? You know what'll kill us all? Climate change. TPP is a fart in the wind. The freakouts about it are as overblown as over Keystone XL.

...How would his economics destroy this country overnight?

That doesn't necessarily make him spineless. He wants to be electable, after all.

And I totally believe that she wont turn right around and pass it if she gets elected.

Rubio accepts the basic supply-side, One Nation Subjugated to a Corporate Monopoly philosophy of the right, coupling it with the usual small-government, anti-LGBT, anti-tax, anti-welfare screed of the Tea Party. Rubio doesn't care about electability; he cares about the big money he can coax out of major donors, since he's an establishment tool: a dancing bear who parades around for Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers.
You can believe whatever you like; it's a free country.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Well, so do I, but only in the sense that I prefer being stabbed in the leg to being shot in the groin. It is not really fair to say that Rubio is a blank slate; he has shown his colors and it is slavish obedience to the dictates of the Koch-Adelson plutarchy.
Edit: Cruz is predicted to win Iowa. No surprise, but I am now intensely curious to hear what Trump will say at his next public appearance.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@nervmeister: I'm not happy about all the big money funding on the Democrats' side, either, but there is little we can do without having someone in the White House who will at least be open to the idea of changing it. Like it or not, big money is here to stay for the time being, and you need it to win elections. Well, unless you're Trump and you throw the rulebook out the window. I'm not sure that's a model that we want to emulate.
Clinton is a surer bet than Sanders, and until we can fix Congress with redistricting, we're going to have to accept incremental change for a bit longer.
Again, I'd love to see a Sanders presidency, but I am terribly afraid that he won't command the same support in the general that Hillary will. These primary results from Iowa are encouraging, but I want to see more.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The fact that Sander's health plan had basic math mistakes (like negative spending on drugs) makes me worried about his competence.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play
Hysteria won't help. The most important thing is to keep a Democrat in the White House and work towards retaking Congress. I don't care what name is up there as long as we make that happen. I do know how sideways we'll be fucked if a Republican gets in and I will not risk that happening even for all the hope and change in the world.
Edit: If Sanders gets the nomination, I will canvass for him like crazy. I'll back him to the bitter end. I will put his bumper sticker on my car and donate to his campaign. I will do everything in my power to help him win. Ditto Clinton. Any Democrat who would abandon the party at the polls over the choice of candidate deserves Trump or Cruz in the White House.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Sanders is trailing by .6% with 14% of the districts left to report. O'Malley looks a little more like a successful spoiler now, assuming the majority of his supporters were otherwise inclined to Bern.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."

Also Trump might 3rd party run if he doesn't get the nomination, it depends on how his ego takes loosing.
Oh god, we could get a Sanders, Cruz, Trump, Bloomberg race. Madness doesn't even begin to cover what that would be.
