The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's nothing really wrong with Clinton

My problem with her is that she's fake. She talks like she's being advised on what to say by a committee of advisers and it feels grating to hear her give out statements she's obviously rehearsed over and over again because she wants to look good in front of the camera.

I'm not entirely sure that, even if Bloomberg did run as a moderate/centrist candidate, it would generate enough support compared to the large number of people on both sides that desire much more change. Though it's not an impossibility.

As for Clinton, I think she represents some inherent flaws in the political establishment, which is something her opponents will absolutely capitalize on just by recycling what they've already been saying about her (and each other). For Sanders, they'd at least have to dig a little further back (commie bastard!).

And in no way limited to her. Sanders is an oddball, big money ties are the norm.

Adric, you make that sound like a politician should go onto the stage completely unrehearsed and speak off the cuff. You know, like Sarah Palin appears to do. This is, while a useful commentary on how she presents herself and something she needs to work on, is not actually a useful criticism on Clinton's actual positions and general competency as a politician, both of which are pretty good. I'd say better than Trump, but that's not a very high bar to reach. And quite frankly, I care about someone who sounds like they make an effort to sound good, or rehearse their points and subject matter, over Trump who goes out and just trash talks anyone who comes to mind.

Also, I don't even agree that she sounds nearly as unnatural as you seem to think she does.

Hillary is basically Obama 2.0.

Like or dislike what you see with Obama? She's pretty much a continuation of him based on everything she's said.

I'm mixed on Obama, to be honest. I used to be a big supporter blindly following his every idea, but then I realized he wasn't really doing a perfect job (then again, his Congress was made of idiots).

Politicians kind of have to be fake-democracy is a popularity contest, and they're under constant public scrutiny. Any politician that knows what they're doing and wants job security has to sort of "act out a role".

[up][up][up] Friend of mine compared Clinton to our chancellor once and he basically said the main difference is that Merkel's at least authentic. It's just an outsider's perspective, mind you - neither of us two are Americans.

She kind of feels like a Merkel knock-off, just minus the charisma and the empathy.

Blind devotion and expecting a president to accomplish everything they say they will is a sure path to disappointment. And despising all politicians is just a path to continual righteous indignation and knowitall status to varying degrees.

In any case, Obama has managed to accomplish a lot in his time in office. Clinton in office means that at least most of those things will be able to continue. Especially APA, to the point that it'll be all but impossible for Republicans to repeal it by the time she's out of office.

[up]This is the first I've heard of Merkel having charisma. The comparison may be lost on people who don't live in Germany.

Well that's bullshit to have to "act out a role". There's no such thing as honesty in politics, and that's why I'm disgusted by it.

Just be glad, however, that my dad is legally unable to run for President. He's repeatedly told me he'd have all the lobbyists shot.

And he'd be arrested for it because it's illegal for a president to do that, Adric. He's just spouting self righteous bullshit about MURDER. So yeah, that was in no way a helpful comment on anything.

In any case, saying a politician shouldn't have to act out a role is basically being ignorant of the fact that anyone in the public eye is essentially doing that all the time. People are waiting to take them down on even the most innocuous of things, and this isn't specific to politicians. Blame society's interest in seeing famous people fall, if you want to feel disgust over something.

Then maybe don't bring in something he said that was, in fact, quite stupid and illegal for 'anyone' to do. There's no legal precedent for a president having lobbyists shot just because they're obnoxious.

I wouldn't say there's absolutely no honesty in politics, but actually finding it can be much, much harder than some would like you to believe.

And ironically, that kind of attitude towards lobbyists is what makes an "honest" anti-politician like Trump appealing to many.

Based on what I can tell: I kind of like Obama as a person, but our politics are pretty different.

I've heard (long ago) that Hillary is more moderate than Obama. I'd vote for her over Sanders or Trump (then again, I'd vote for Lex Luthor over Donald Trump).

My dad mostly dislike lobbyists because of how they pay off politicians (he hates the Koch Brothers a lot too). I don't know if that might be because the political system in Mexico (where he's from) is really corrupt or what, but I'm certain he's mostly exaggerating when he says it.

As for me, I just want a politician that goes up and does the right thing because it's the right thing. I guess I'm just too idealistic for that, though.

Dude, I wasn't. Pointing out that's a stupid thing to say is not insulting him, and you didn't give us any other context than that he said it.

[up][up]The ironic thing about Trump is that he's one of the lobbyists, or at least known among their ranks before his run for president. And none of his supporters seem to fucking care in the least about any of that!

Bloomberg is a weird one. Even if he does run (and that's unlikely), he doesn't really have the presence or real credibility to pull votes from Hilary, Sanders or Trump, I think.
