Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Make that greater of three. Don't forget Ben Carson.
It's possible that the country will be so freaked out by Cruz or Trump being the Republican candidate, that it hurts Reps downticket and causes a Democrat sweep in local elections, while at the same time, Bloomberg pulls votes away from the Dem president, resulting in a Republican president with a more Democrat Congress trying to block his every move.

Again, with Trump, even if he's The Load, he'd at least keep things running, because "A Strong Man keeps the trains on time". Cruz just might shut down the government again out of spite. And again, a lot of the Donor portion of the party and big money types know Trump within reason that yes.
He is the more acceptable option.
With him and Cruz on the table, Trump at least promises to bring an era of consistent governance and big payouts for big business. Cruz might mean four years of the 2013 Government Shutdown looming overhead like the sword of Damocles.
That's why the GOP is beginning to circle around El Toupee.

I just hope Trump ends up dropping out. I'm close to praying to God just to make him drop out.
Then again, he'll probably only last one term at best, if he even finishes it without impeachment.
Seriously, I'm freaking out at this moment. I really don't want to move out of the country if he wins. I'm scared.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Garcon, would you stop saying Trump's gonna get assassinated? It's getting disturbing at this point. Assassinations of presidents in any case tend to be a pretty terrible thing.
Anyway, I'd also discount Carson because of the very sudden drop off of attention. I haven't heard anything substantial about him in like three weeks.
And yeah, Cruz has pissed off a lot of his own party. If you can't work with your own team, it's highly unlikely you can work with the other guys.
Hopefully, and I'm confident, that there are enough goodhearted people in the United States that Trump will get blown out on Election Day. I would also hope that even if he isn't the nominee, Dems would support whoever the Democratic nominee is whether it be Hillary or Bernie, because they'd be so much better than any of the Republicans.
Yes, yes I can. First off, presidential assassinations in this country is rare. Second, most attempts are actually from people who have mental problems, and not for political reasons. Third, IT'S GETTING FUCKING DISTURBING THAT YOU KEEP SAYING IT. With conviction, no less. It's not funny or insightful. It's not even adding anything useful to the conversation. It's just getting more and more fucking obnoxious.

Barring some unprecedented economic/military disaster; Trump isn't winning. You'd need a near total collapse in Dem voter turnout and Trump is already causing demographics that favor the Dems to register en masse. Trump's supporters may be angry and motivated but they can't win the White House alone. And polls show that 20%-33% of registered Republicans would have serious reservations about voting for the Donald anyway.
Former mayor of New York City, big time media kingpin. Socially liberal but economically conservative. He's worth over 40 billion, so he could fund his own campaign Trump style.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I doubt any on the the Democratic side would vote for Trump. At worst, if they don't like the dem candidate, they wouldn't vote, and that's a problem on both sides. Seems like a lot of Republican voters just wouldn't vote if Trump got the nomination.
This seems like a year that the swing voters will be pretty important maybe?
Bloomberg; is a Republican and former new York mayor.

He'd draw more Dem votes, thus ratfucking Dems in states they'd easily landslide Trump in. Ergo, President Trump.
And Bloomberg's more or less stated he plans to run for President if Sanders becomes the Dem Nominee, to keep the country out of the hands of both whacko birds (Sanders and Trump)
Exactly, Trump lost the White House with that first speech where he called Mexicans rapists. Trump did more for the cause of Latino political engagement with one speech that an activist could do in a decade.
On another note, Bloomberg mulled running in the last two presidential races as well. It never amounted to anything, not even an exploratory committee.
Bloomberg isn't stupid, he knows that would only give the election to the GOP. And he considers their positions on social issues to be absolute deal breakers.
