Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump has been unironically compared to Hitler on numerous occasions; the parallels are uncanny. The good news, if one can call it that, is that he's almost certainly not going to get elected, not without an unprecedented economic or military crisis this year.
Do all of those Republicans who are now calling Trump their preferred alternative to Cruz not remember only a short while ago when they were saying he was the doom of the party and needed to be stopped at all costs?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"How to Make Donald Trump President
:
- Nominate Bernie Sanders
- Bloomberg makes an independent run
- Democrats defect to Bloomberg
Hardly. Who in the Trumposphere is going to jump ship to a New York elitist?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"They do realize Trump himself is an New York elitist right?
An article on Bloomberg's plans.
He may run if Hillary Clinton is severally weakened, or if Sanders is nominated.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. He walks, talks and acts like a blue-collar American who got rich. He sounds authentic in the same way Dubya did.
And yeah, Bloomberg probably means President Trump. Remember, a more than insignificant number of Democrats are centrists who believe both parties do it and we need to be more moderate, so Fighteer's right.
On the other hand, Trump despite his massive bigotry, would be probably. Uh. Arguably a remoderation of the Republicans to their Centrist elements. He might be a fascist and a bigot but he's pretty much said he wants Government. Keep Medicare and Social Security at their current levels. And keep out the dangerous foreigners with the funny names.
But the point is he's not a Tea Partier. Which has to be calming to the Republican Elite, who after 6 years of the Tea Party, probably want "Business as usual".

Not that I have anything to base this on, but what are the chances that the real reason the establishment is backing Trump is because they know he can't win? Cruz is a bigger slime-ball but he seems to be better at hiding his evil than Trump.
Either one, if elected, would be disastrous for the country - especially the conservative brand which would get the blame. Maybe they figured it would be best just to bite the bullet for this election and hope the next one will produce a better crop.
I know that "the establishment" isn't some hive mind, or a group with formal membership and strict hierarchy. So it's not so cut and dry to say that Trump has its support or not.
I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around Trump being the preferred candidate and not just a political version of the load that the GOP is forced to take.
He's not Cruz, from what I reading, is the thing.
Cruz might be have the conservative bonafides, but he's a completely intolerable person. Nearly every other person interviewed about him on Capital Hill or are Party Elders in recent weeks have said in one way or another Cruz is a complete asshole, and not a team player. Which is exactly what they don't need.
Cruz's personality is that toxic and that much of a deal breaker.

I know it's Godwin, but I expect people felt the same way about Hitler
