Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He isn't stupid: he's Refuge in Audacity incarnate.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.![]()
He is not stupid, but he is not brilliant either. He is effective because he does things his rivals thought would never happen, but I honestly don't know how they still can't be prepared after almost a year of Trumpisms. Maybe they are banking on him also dying at 69 and clearing the way for the presidency, I don't know.
Ach, my grandmother today. "I'd vote for Trump over Hillary, she'd destroy our country." After me asking how she'd be somehow worse for every organism possessing more that one cell, she says "Because she's a woman. A woman can't be in charge of America. Everyone else would just be laughing at us," says the woman who has successfully run the finances of my grandfather's company for over 40 years. . .
What.
It's not that surprising. Many old socially conservative women tend to be biased against their own sex.
Tell her nobody's laughing at Germany, though.
Thatcher and Merkel were/are also fairly conservative, especially economically.

DNC Chair Claims Weekend Debates Are Meant To 'Maximize' Attention For Candidates Yes, really.
There's something about that photo of her. I can't quite place what the expression is meant to be. Almost looks like she's thinking "Well, duh."

DWC is a sleazebag. I don't know who she thinks she's fooling with that blatant lie.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I watched the debate last night, which is the first one I've managed to catch (Democrat or Republican). Got to say, I actually liked what I saw, from all three candidates. Hilary is basically promising to be Obama's third term, while Sanders is saying that he'll go for more progressive policies (replacing Obamacare with a universal single-payer system, for example). Martin O'Malley seemed like a reasonable guy; he didn't get as much focus (to no one's surprise), but on a purely personal level I liked him. He was insistent without being rude, especially when he was trying to get a word in edgewise. That said, I don't really know anything about his policies, so he could be a reasonable-sounding dingbat.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.O'Malley is something of a zero politically. His main claim to fame is as the governor of Maryland, under which the Baltimore police department saw a large amount of reform aimed at cleaning up systemic bias and racism, and had a few nasty incidents.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The Yeehawdists posted videos asking people to stop sending them dildos and other sex toys. I think they lost their sense of irony somewhere during the Yeehawd.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I saw that video too. It is ooooooold. But funny, cuz' the guy is all like "I CAN'T BELIEVE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE SO MUCH HATRED! JUST HATRED AND HATRED AND HATRED!"
Sometimes when I am reminded of them, I feel pity for them. But then I flush, and promptly forget about that line of business.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes"#Wall Martyrs"
I saw most of the debate and caught up with the rest afterward. Thought a good job by all three for the most part and yeah, O'Malley has this gift for coming off as a nice and quite insightful guy. Makes me feel bad about forgetting him. At the very least he'd make a good VP.
Thought Clinton was the best of the three.
I'm not really a fan of Sanders though. His big business/banks/etc. thing is a glaring Single-Issue Wonk that he kept bringing up even in circumstances where it's not the most relevant. Particularly in answering questions about racial inequality.

If he was a brilliant bully, I don't know, but that's not exactly the case here.
