The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Just that the constitution requires a president be a "natural-born citizen of the United States".

[up][up]Originally it was probably designed to prevent foreign nations from making a president subservient to them. At this point it doesn't really have any practical purpose though.

Unless you're a bunch of old white conservatives who don't like the idea of the country being run by a black man.

Sorry, I have no sympathy for Cruz after he entertained the same crap regarding Obama for so long. And anything that keeps that fanatic away from the Oval Office is a good thing anyway; this is just karmic.

I guess nearly every country on Earth has a law or two prohibiting foreigners from ruling the country.

Yes, but most countries only require you to have citizenship and to give up your old citizenship if you have more than one. And sometimes that rule is an informal convention. Canada's current foreign minister is also a citizen of France (he was once in the running for PM as well, but lost for unrelated reasons).

The fact that some kid who was adopted or came over with their parents at an age where they only ever remembered living in the US is automatically disqualified is a standout, at least in the First World.

I watched some of Cruz and Trump's clashes from the latest debate. As much as I deeply dislike both men, Cruz is handily the better debater, and he easily deflected Trump's truther accusation. Though I guess his job was half-done for him, since the allegation was total bullshit.

Then again, Trump pretty much humiliated him later on over the insult about "New York values". Though I guess in that case, Trump was aided by Cruz's insult being bullshit.

What's the rationale behind the importance of being born in America? Is the theory that someone born outside the country won't be properly loyal to the interests of the United States considering it isn't their homeland?
Prevent rich nobility from another country to move in, buy up Electoral College votes, and then basically take over the country.

Not so sure about the Electoral College part but basically that. Along with the "no titles of nobility" thing, the worry was that America would end up as an elected or constitutional monarchy.

Took a bit of googling, but some of the Federalists actually tried to invite a Prussian prince to be King of America.

She has a point, in that Sanders' version is a left-wing vision of "Repeal and Replace," and in the course of implementation, the GOP would try extra hard to make sure that only the first of those two happened.

Note that i'm still likely voting for Sanders if he hasn't dropped out by the time elections get to Pennsylvania in May, i just don't think he's going to be able to do any of what he's suggesting.
