The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The problem with nukes as deterrence is delivery system. Except for next door neighbors like India and Pakistan, you have to have good ICBMs or long range planes and those planes still need to be able to slink past conventional air defenses for optimum strategic deployment. So even if Japan had achieved a nuclear breakthrough in the 11th hour of WWII, they would have had no means to do much damage beyond nuking the home islands further still.

[up][up][up][up] More like it would launch the nukes before it became a one state.

Edit: Also I doubt Pakistan would disarm ether.

What I find rather funny. Or probably sad.

Is that just about every candidate is going on about how weak and spineless Obama is and how they'll be a strong Commander in Chief.

But I know for a fact almost every one of them was going on about how much of an iron fisted dictator Obama was not too long ago.

The amount of doublethink with Republicans is ridiculous.

Oh really when?

Anyone else watching Trump/Cruz debate Cruz's citizenship.

I'll give Cruz credit, he is holding his own.

If anyone's in the mood for comedy (yes, this is politics related), here's the official Donald Trump jam:

I was cracking up when I first saw this.

I just noticed that Rand Paul and Fiorina aren't in this debate.

Remember when Fiorina was actually a threat to Trump? That seems like an eternity ago.

Fiorina might get back on the stage. I hear she did well in the undercard.

I literally had to make popcorn for the Trump and Cruz exchange. It was glorious enough for that trope.

I'd assume he lacks charisma, the certain vital something. It. The magnetism you need to connect with people. Charisma's weird.

So I'm looking at some of Hillary's political ads and they're rated really low...but I'm hearing her say some pretty inspiring stuff.

Whereas Bernie Sanders' ads are nearly all thumbs up. What's that about?

I saw part of the thing about cruz's citizenship.

If ANYONE was complaining about Obama's "natural born-ness" and supports Cruz, they're an absolute hypocrit. No matter what they think or believe about where he was born and where he was raised, we know he was born to his mother who is and was an American Citizen. Cruz wasn't born in this country but was born to american parents, so even in the deepest conspiracy theories of obama's birth, they're at the same level.

And yet a clan mate of mine in an online game disputed this by saying his mother wasn't 18 and thus "Wasn't a full citizen yet".

That's not how citizenship works. It has nothing to do with age, at least in American law.

LSBK Since: Sep, 2014
#108767: Jan 14th 2016 at 9:17:33 PM

I think there actually is (or at least was) an age requirement to give citizenship to children born to Americans out of country, but either way it doesn't apply to Obama, because he wasn't born out of the country.

I stopped caring about Cruz when I saw the "machine gun-cooked bacon" ad. Is he more or less dangerous than Trump were he to somehow win the election?

[up]Exterior-wise he is more harmless, but otherwise he may be even more dangerous because unlike Trump, he may be able to disguise similar policy with jargon that won't enrage everyone who isn't a racist American stereotype.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
