The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They'll have to establish a pecking order.

Go home, Jeb!. You're the least liked candidate among the entire GOP field.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the State of the Union address. Am I the only one to watch it tonight? At least part of it, anyway. Paul Ryan just sat there kind of stone faced the entire time and Biden... made some interesting facial expressions.

I'll pick up the summary later. I'm not terribly interested in watching a politician speak for two hours, even if it's Give No Fucks Obama.

What the hell is a "Right to Rise" grant?

Isn't Right To Rise the name of Jeb's super PAC?

I just caught the end of the address, and it seemed perfectly... acceptable, which I actually found a bit refreshing as of late.

Though quite a few pleas for "can't we just all get along?" that I imagine fell on more than few deaf ears.

Actually this speech was just a little over an hour. It started around eight and ended like nine fifteen. Very short for such a speech.

Is something wrong with Haley's mouth? Her speech was better than I expected, but her teeth not moving (while her lips were) was distracting.

@Xopher, from what I can gather, the idea is to axe most or all current wellfare programs and replace it with a lump sum grant given to each state to do with it as they please.

[up] Given some of the earlier discussion about states that were able to do as they please, that sounds Less Than Promising.

Indeed. Mine is one that opted to not expand state medical services to comply with ACA, and you pretty much have to be homeless/jobless/assetless to be even considered for medicaid now. I shudder to think about what would happen if even more social service programs were left entirely in their hands.

I presume without any kind of protection against embezzlement?

The grants aren't a bad idea on their own, it's the implementation that's wicked here. Single grants for welfare purposes are, basically, minimum income by another name.

Republicans realllly seem to love local internet monopolies.

And yet more and more of the American people are feeling the pain of the high prices and data caps. They're complaining more and more. It's becoming a harder and harder issue to ignore. Could it be more fucking obvious that these scum don't represent their voters? At what point will Republican voters get sick and tired of "corporate Republicans" and throw them out?

They already are throwing them out. Unfortunately, it's not happening fast enough, and it has other deleterious consequences, such as emphasizing naked racism and religious insanity over corporate greed.

Because what you get when you stroke a Republican is one of those three, basically. Well, four if you count the omnipresent gun fetishists.
