Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I hope they are being mocked.
Y'all Qaeda being mocked by PETA would be hilarious and it also would allow us to document the relationship between the insane groups of the U.S in 'pecking order' fashion
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes
X3 I'd say it's a publicity stunt, if they just sent regular people the stuff it wouldn't make headlines, but sending it to terrorists gets PETA in the headlines. I'm sure they'd send it to other terrorists if they could find a mailing address.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran
Then why does it not make the headlines when PETA feeds itself?
Who says PETA eat it themselves? They probably feast on the corpses of all the animals they kill.
Id say that many of the animals they kill have "a shred of intelligence".

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranProbably just to do it,
Anyway, I feel like you guys are too busy laughing about Peta to get to the latter half the article dealing with the Paiute's response to this situation. As well as Ammon Bundy's snide, tone deaf response to that response. Basically no one in that area wants a bunch of armed assholes from Nevada up there. For guys who are all about freedom they're ignoring the hell out of the opinions of the people who actually live in this place.

Sean Penn has been roaming Latin America interviewing people he see as underdogs under the US pressure, like a couple of years ago he visited Venezuela to defend Chaves and Maduro, so he really went for the interview but certainly wasn't aware the US and Mexican authorities would follow.

Inter arma enim silent leges@Fighteer: Unfortunately, Sanders is (as you've noted before) so focused on systems and causes that he fails to note that ISIS-as-it-exists needs to be dealt with.
Honestly, though, from Sanders I would accept a Desert Storm III IFF he went in with a plan for wiping ISIS off the map, getting our troops out immediately and getting his economic solutions in. (If he said "We are going to have the Army in Iraq for ten years and support for twenty more," he'd get points for honesty, but nobody wants a plan like that.)
Nobody may want a long term state building mission but it's that or playing terrorist whack-a-mole forever.
Nobody wanted to invest in stabilising Afganistan after the Soviets left, they got their way, it didn't work out well for us though did it?
We can do it properly once or we can keep doing it over and over again and again.
Luckily the area that needs work is shrinking, the Kurdish areas wouldn't need the US there, they can manage themselves. But if Bagdad retakes the Sunni areas and wants to avoid another terrorist group taking ISIS' place a few years down the line, (which it has done in part) then it's going to need to reform itself (unlikely) or be reformed by outside powers.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt strikes me as a little condescending for first nation citizens to talk about reforming troublesome regions of the globe when their own political houses aren't exactly in order. The US currently has xenophobic fascists as 'serious' presidential candidates, Canada only fairly recently just got out of Harper's boondoggle, and most of Europe doesn't seem particularly happy with their current state of leadership.
I know that we'd be waiting forever if we waited for a perfect country to have the moral right to intervene in other nations' affairs, but how many political issues does a country have to have before intervention in a weaker party's affairs crosses the line into being hypocritical? I would feel a lot better about intervening if I weren't afraid that practically any given country could flip the switch over into crazy town in any given election. A little political stability of our own would be nice before we go sallying forth to impose theoretical order on others.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed. That runs on the assumption that Trump stands a chance though. He does not. And even if he does, there is absolutely no excuse that could ever validate not acting at this point given all the troubles it rises, not just in the region, but in the U.S.
Besides, you cannot deny that the existence of these terrorist groups are also fuel for the fear propaganda machine of the extreme right wingers, so shutting them down is not only better to do, it is also working on YOUR problems.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes

It's vegan jerky. They sent a bunch of gun-toting cowboys vegan jerky. I'm honestly not sure if this was meant as a show of support for Y'all Qaeda or if they were trying to be snide and the Yeehawdists were too hungry to realize they were being made fun of.
