The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, what, do Sanders' and O'Malley's supporters dislike Clinton more than they do Trump?

I think it's a combination of people who feel disenfranchised with the system, conspiracy theorists obsessed with the Clintons, the anyone but Clinton crowd, and the people who aren't taking things seriously yet more than anything else, but I've observed some people whose politics are nearly diametrically opposed to Trump's saying similar things.

Stupidity is an infectious disease.

Also there are Southern Democrats out there.

Does this give Trump an actual shot at winning if he tones down his rhetoric a bit after snatching the candidacy?

Personally? I'd just say to ignore the poll. We know nothing about how it was conducted, the 20% crossover figure is only 6% of the opposite crossover (eg Republicans who'd vote for Hillary if Trump was the nominee), and they don't comment on how it'd interact with independents.

It's somewhat worrisome, but until we get confirmation from other polls, I wouldn't panic.

And if it is Southern Democrats, then as far as the presidency goes, they aren't going to make any difference.

That said, if a large chunk of them live in Ohio, Florida, and other true swing states...

Somehow, I'd forgotten about the electoral college. And to think a few weeks ago I was rambling about how awful it is.

Also it's one poll (without a particularly big sample size) and they're self identified Democrats and likely voters.

In regards to my earlier question about "how much of America is racist", I get that not everyone is racist, but wouldn't it be a problem is non-racists elect racists?

Like Scott Adams said, everybody is stupid sometimes. Even the smartest guy on the entire planet can occasionally pull a boner that makes him look like a total moron.

So don't think of racism as being such an all-or-nothing scenario, either. Even the worst racist in the world isn't thinking racist thoughts every second of every minute of every day, 24/7/365.

Please note that I'm not defending racism in any way, shape or form. I'm just saying that such a trait does not define a person overall, and being like that in one particular aspect of life doesn't automatically carry over into everything else that you do. So a candidate who happens to be a racist might, for instance, turn out to be a very good sewer commissioner, or treasurer, or what-have-you.

Trump is racist, but that's just one of his many faults. He's also arrogant, elitist, egotistical, dishonest, ignorant, boorish... well, you get the idea.

Trump has a 60% disapproval rating, you don't win the White House in a two way race with those numbers. Unless Bernie Sanders loses the primary and randomly decides to run as a third party candidate and electorally suicide bomb the country, Trump is cooked. And since Bernie has indicated that he isn't a lunatic, that isn't happening.

Woman raped by five men in New York City park, police say A case like this could be big trouble for De Blasio. Wasn't their a case like this in the 90's when they convicted the wrong guy?

You're probably thinking of the infamous Central Park jogger case, where five different men were all convicted as having gangraped and assaulted the woman (very nearly killing her) in '89, only for the real culprit to come forward in 2002, confess, and have DNA evidence prove that he really did it.

[up][up][up]Nowhere near Trump's and she does badly among those who never vote Democrat anyway. Trump has pissed off youth and minorities who are vital to win certain swing states.
