Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

- Prohibit Congress from regulating activity that occurs wholly within one State.
- Require Congress to balance its budget.
- Prohibit administrative agencies — and the un-elected bureaucrats that staff them — from creating federal law.
- Prohibit administrative agencies — and the un-elected bureaucrats that staff them — from preempting state law.
- Allow a two-thirds majority of the states to override a U.S. Supreme Court decision.
- Require a seven-justice super-majority vote for U.S. Supreme Court decisions that invalidate a democratically enacted law.
- Restore the balance of power between the federal and state governments by limiting the former to the powers expressly delegated to it in the Constitution.
- Give state officials the power to sue in federal court when federal officials overstep their bounds.
- Allow a two-thirds majority of the states to override a federal law or regulation.
"Trump security screened attendees and ejected those who didn't declare allegiance to the billionaire."
"declare allegiance to the billionaire"
"declare allegiance"
"the billionaire"
There's something unbelievable about that.
That part is still funny. But the coats thing, ah ah, that's no good.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayThe "affects only one state" thing is probably a backdoor way of targeting what's generally called the Interstate Commerce Clause. Really, it's just the Commerce Clause, but it comes from a bit in the Constitution that gives the Federal Government only to regulate commerce with other countries, Indian tribes, and "among the several states". It's been on the shit list of conservatives ever since the Civil Rights era, when the Supreme Court ruled that, say, a hotel couldn't refuse to rent to blacks since they are serving guests from another state, or a restaurant couldn't refuse to seat black patrons since their foods and customers come from out of state, etc.
To be fair, the Commerce Clause has been used as an often flimsy excuse to regulate just about everything and anything, but yeah, screw the conservative wish to get rid of it and go back to the days of discriminating against whoever they feel like, screw Greg Abbott, and screw the idea that the US is actually 50 different countries loosely joined together. It's not assholes, and you don't get to run (or ruin) it as though it was.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Muslim woman escorted out of Donald Trump campaign rally after silent protest.
The woman attended the rally at Rock Hill, SC, and stood up in silent protest when Trump began insinuating that Syrian refugees were linked to ISIS. The crowd started jeering her, and police escorted her out. One person apparently shouted at her "You have a bomb, you have a bomb."
Trump's response: "There is hatred against us that is unbelievable. It's their hatred, it's not our hatred."
Sure, Trump. Stay classy.
What I've started to wonder is how much of Trump's nonsense is actual bigotry, how much is Attention Whoring, and how much is him acting this way because he legitimately thinks it will get him elected.
Well, Trump's father was involved with a riot the KKK caused in New York
, Trump himself has been accused of discrimination in his housing complexes
for 40+ years
, a book written about him in the 90s by a former employee claims Trump said things like "laziness is a trait of the blacks" and "the only guys I like counting my money are short guys who wear yarmulkes"
, he's a prominent birther about Obama and said he still was as of July 2015
, and then there's this list of quotes
, I think it's safe to say that it's all genuine. This is just who the guy is.

During rally, Trump ordered security to take protestor's coats and 'throw them out in the cold!"
Over here in stockholm we just had a 10C temperature dop. Moments ago, I woke up, in the middle of the night, feeling like i was going to die, with my teeth gnashing, my limbs trembling, my bones hurting.
Trump wants to do that to people, on purpose.
Trump is not funny anymore.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
