Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

How about Candy Corn? It's corn that tastes like candy.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"What I'm curious about (assuming this doesn't end with the building being stormed or the gunmen deciding to go out in a blaze of glory, and I think law enforcement is trying very hard to avoid either of those outcomes) is what will happen when these guys surrender. I mean they literally took up arms against the United States and called for others to join them in doing so. That's about as textbook a definition of insurrection as you can find, along with all the other charges that can be thrown at them. (And honestly, I would love to see them tried for Treason too.)
I want them to be taken in peacefully, because what kicked off the militia movement of the 90s was the heavy handed tactics and treatment at Waco and Ruby Ridge, so I don't want that to become the rallying cry for the current batch of militia fuckwads, but legally they should absolutely get the book thrown at them. It will be absolutely infuriating if these guys continue to get a reaction like "Those wacky boys" from the country at large, especially when at the same time large portions of the country watch police roll up to a 12 year old kid with a pellet gun and blow him away as soon as they get out of their car (in an Open Carry state no less) and talk about how it would be a tragedy if the cop was charged.

The double-standard there is intense, but a whole lot of people buy into it unreservedly.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, I've seen people complaining about how if these guys had been black or Arabic then the National Guard would already have been scrambled and they'd all be dead.
But apparently it's OK to side with these people and call the Ferguson rioters animals because the white guys haven't actually destroyed anything.

"Yup. That tasted purple."They are just spaghetti western fans with way too much time in their hands. Their incompetence alone will drive them into poverty alone so if you ask me the only attention they deserve is the same a clown circus gets.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesMaybe the Feds can save some money by just waiting for them to starve/accidentally burn the place down/forget to keep breathing? Seriously, every dead insurgent in history is rolling in their graves, from laughter, at this ineptitude.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Seems that Bundy has lost the plot more than we thought. Apparently Jesus wrote the Constitution personally or something.

"Yup. That tasted purple."Well, with the double standard, I've heard people point it out the other way around as well ("these people were complaining about police militarization with Ferguson, why are they so bloodthirsty now?").
My view is something along the lines of "right tool for the right job". How you deal with an armed militia occupation on a building you only want to protect on principle is different than how you deal with a riot that's actively destroying valuable property. (For example, non-lethal force is a viable option when dealing with riot control, not when dealing with a militia)
Zachary Hale Comstock called. He says he wants his minions back. So that he can fire them for being too crazy even for him.
IF Bundy had only founded a failure of a city in shit terrain that guaranteed neither grazing nor water to its citizens, but not raised a stink about being a shitlord, it would have been enough
IF Bundy had only raised a stink about being a shitlord, but not radicalized his family into gun wielding nutjobs, it would have been enough
IF Bundy had only radicalized his family into gun wielding nutjobs, but not mistakn scripture with constitution, it would have been enough
IF Bundy had only mistaken scripture with constitution, but not given us these mighty fine hours of entertainment laughing at his own starvation IT. WOULD. HAVE. BEEN. ENOUGH.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesA Right-Wing Militia Fanatic group has seized an (unoccupied) building in a national park in Oregon and is threatening to hold it until the Federal government releases two ranchers who surrendered for prison terms after being charged with arson. They also apparently want the government to cede sovereignty over the land of the park itself.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Y'all Qaeda performed a Yee-Hawd on an empty building. Ryan Bundy, son of Cliven Bundy, has a bunch of yokels holding up in a government building and demanding that the land be turned over to farmers. They forgot to bring food, however, and are appealing on social media for snacks.
Wait, they're demanding the release of convicts? I thought it was about the park.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

Different discipline, but this is pretty much Dawkins.jpg.
What's precedent ever done for us?
