Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If the rapture comes and they're right, I fucking hope they aren't Left Behind; the world is in enough trouble without them around.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Now, now. It's a sign of sanity and deserves, if not applause, at least not indecorous jeering.
Worth noting is that was one of the shortest "long term insurrections" ever. However vocal these folks may be, they lack the conviction to take their beliefs to the logical conclusion.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Oh, you meant the two ranchers who started the thing. Oh, yeah, they were going to do that already. Sorry, I thought you meant the terrorists occupying that building.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, I heard that in the news this morning. It was stated quite clearly that the people occupying that building had no legal right to speak for the Hammonds, and in fact they just seemed to be giving out a list of complaints to the reporters. They didn't seem much concerned with the charges against the accused, which were arson, and they were suspected of committing arson to cover up poaching deer on federal land.
Seems like they're basically encroaching on a wildlife reserve, which I guess would explain why the building was currently unoccupied.
If you look at election results for 2012 and 2008, though, Florida is pretty much pure urban/rural divide. Miami and surroundings, Orlando, and Tampa, (the biggest metro areas in the state besides Jacksonville, which is in the north and thus, ironically, solidly Southern) plus Tallahassee and Gainesville (the aforementioned college towns) are blue, while the rest of the state is red.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Tallahassee is pretty openly liberal. Hell, it has a bunch of immigrants too. I went to a Target there once and saw an Arab couple, a Mexican couple, and a Chinese couple (I think, might be another Asian group, I don't know much about Asian culture). Most people in Marianna are white or (kind of poor) African Americans.
Though I have found in the local Marianna college that it's a tad bit more liberal, except when we get out of towners from Chipley (and most of them in the college have no fucking idea how evolution works).
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?I love that nickname. Well, at least they can take advantage of the efficiency of the U.S. Postal Service to help supply their would-be insurrection against the U.S. government.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Some news sites are announcing Obama's "executive action" on guns will be expanding background checks to online sales and gun shows. Also requires private merchants to have something akin to a sales permit, and increases psych check funding to BATF. CNN

Which would be starkly unconstitutional, so...
I just remembered
Ben Carson had a movie
.
I only just made the connection between the guy in the movie and Ben Carson 0_0
Its jarring because, well, the movie is about how you can do anything if you learn how to read and such, and the guy its about turns out to be an egomaniac who thinks Joseph built the pyramids to store grain. I thought it was a good movie

I'm rather certain the Spanish had to have put something in the water to create such a degree of Stupid though...
