Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Apparently this is all a massive conspiracy to keep the only person capable of stopping a Paris-style attack from getting into office.
Assuming it's even true and not just something CBS made up since they're funding the Clinton campaign.
Just an example of the stuff you see on the internet.
The sons of Cliven Bundy have taken over the Federal Refuge building in Oregon
.
...is simply starving the occupiers by ensuring that they can't leave an option?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotTrump: Clinton, Obama 'created ISIS
Okay, Trump. The next time I visit my friend who is into Wicca, I'm going to ask her for Wicca curses, cause you're "so special".
Usually, if I get annoyed enough with whoever, I just think "may you be an animal in your next life" (seriously, it's way way way way tamer than "go to hell").
But Trump is "so special", I need something with more poetic justice. Maybe a hell wherein all he hears and sees are headlines about himself. It will be a temp-hell, of course. (I do not believe in perma-hells.)
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.Occupying a building in itself isn't terrorism. If it is then every protester who's ever done a sit down type of thing in a building is a terrorist. And as they appear to have decided to stage this in what was apparently an unoccupied building that tends to fly in the face of other terrorist acts, which actively seek out places with a lot of people in them. In any case, this is six to twelve people and seems a good deal more containable than the showdown Bundy forced... however long ago that was. Seems like the police could simply way this group out, especially if the two that are supposed to report into the police don't.
Did the feds ever just... you know, figure out a way to seize Bundy's cattle or something? Did he ever get any sort of comeuppance or are we still waiting for that?
They called people to take arms against the US Government. Isn't that textbook sedition?
Shouldn't they go right to fucking jail?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Well she did make it up, and it was Al Shabob that did this not ISIS, and they probably use stuff like this all the time.
Al-Shabaab is an al-Qa'eda offshoot, just like ISIS, and its senior officers started pledging allegiance to ISIS in October.
Pretty sure I'd count this one as 'close enough', even if you can split a few hairs about their precise relationship.

Pretty sure it's a defecting faction of Al Shabob that's swearing allegiance to ISIS, not the main group. I don't know which one released the video. Regardless, Trump was featured in no Jihadi propaganda at the time Clinton made the accusation. And again, US officials, including Bush, Obama, and probably Clinton herself often feature in these things. And I doubt anyone becomes a terrorist because of Donald Trump. They become a terrorist because their house got droned. Or because they desperately wanted a sense of belonging. Or they just felt a sense of Arab racial superiority and Muslim religious superiority and decided to go kill the infidels, that is a thing you know, much in the way of other supremacist ideology's like the Nazi's or the KKK.
Again, Clinton made a bald faced, easily verifiable lie. And as long as it keeps that racist, incompetent, arrogant, thieving lunatic Donald Trump out of the White House, I'm okay with it.
If they are all killed it will send a message to others like them that it is not "their country" anymore, and that they and their views are no longer wanted or will be tolerated. This will hopefully discourage such action in the future.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.
But then the US government would crush said uprising, and if Reconstruction was done right, their ideology would be destroyed for good. It's often said that many Abolitionists were praying for the South to secede as it would provide the excuse the government needed to abolish slavery. And besides, the more I think about it, the more it seems these guys aren't the sort to fight. Their just a bunch of redneck ranchers who have various disputes with the Feds over land rights, and are trying to rip off the Bundy stand off in order to gain attention. Faced with a serious threat of force I have little doubt they will surrender.
When Trump loses the nomination I'm half expecting him to do a third party run.
As for the Bundy stuff, yes the US military would win, but it would be bloody as hell, and I belive our Southern Tropers have said they'd rather not having their homes turned into a warzone, even if that would get rid of these assholes.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranFew people become terrorists for only one reason. Extreme action is generally a product of multiple factors, one of which is worldview. Worldview is influenced by the way the world is portrayed in media - both news and fictional.
Sure, nobody's going to run out and join Al Qaida because Trump keeps threatening to turn the country against Muslims, but those threats will make them feel isolated and afraid. Drafting a narrative in which President Trump will throw all the Muslims in concentration camps - a narrative that Trump himself is eager to help create - sends a message that American Muslims must be afraid of their own government, and that foreign Muslims cannot turn to the U.S. for help.
It encourages desperation. Hate groups thrive on desperation. Their numbers swell when their demographic experiences fear and despair, and believes that there is no one else who will help. So no, nobody's going to run out and join Al Qaida because Trump said some shit about Muslims, but the next time Al Qaida or ISIS or al-Shabab talks to them, they might be more inclined to listen.
