Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@ Fighteer:
I guess that's what Trump's supporters might say at the other end of the spectrum.

Since Obama has, self-evidently, not taken away everyone's guns or declared a military dictatorship, evidence is on my side.
As noted
, if you ignore facts and just declare whatever you believe to be the truth, you can always try to flip rhetoric onto your side of the fence. Doesn't make it rational or logical.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's certainly not mental illness. I've known people that hold these views who (at least as far as I know) have no actual issues. It's a matter of choice, raising, and disinformation.
Now it is an extreme case of bias and illogical thinking, but if that was counted as mental illness then everyone would be considered mentally ill at some point on some issue.

I'm baaaaaaackIf it doesn't count as mental illness, it should. We spend way too much time playing the "everyone is entitled to their point of view" game.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"No, I wouldn't take it that far. Besides, most mental illness can be treated on an outpatient basis. However, I can dream about requiring passing a logical fallacies test as a condition for being allowed to exercise any form of franchise. It wouldn't have to be specific to any particular political philosophy.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well you're significantly broadening the definition of mental illness, and would have to include Anyone whoever held true to a belief that had clear flaws. Were Lamarkian evolutionists mentally ill? Was Ben Franklin mentally ill for getting electron flow backwards? Are half the people in the .gif pronunciation argument mentally ill? What about those who argue the Star wars prequels were better than the originals?

I'm baaaaaaack@ Garcon What is the JCS? Also, I am genuinely surprised other countries think the US world order is fair and just, I thought the consensus was that America was nothing but a self righteous bully that should mind it's own business, that business being to crawl into an ugly fat whole and die.
Or at least that's how it was by the end of the bush administration.
Those who believe the prequels are better should be thrown into an asylum to rot. They are clearly insane and a menace to society.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.JCS stands for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. A group made up of the highest ranking generals and admirals from every branch of the American military.
That being said they technically don't have any operational authority anymore and exist only as a group of advisors.

Oh really when? And with Benghazi, the upcoming movie is precisely as "America, FUCK YEAH!" as you'd expect it to be, from what I've been hearing.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"There's an interesting editorial
in the NYT today about the role of political consulting firms (meaning, in large part, ad firms) in propelling the explosive growth in the cost of campaign financing.
Not yay. Those things vandalize the wiki and we have to ban people for them constantly.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Rubio doesn't seem to want to do any of the work to get elected. It's weird.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I dunno if I'd call it mental illness as opposed to the success of the greatest propaganda machine this side of Best Korea.
Oh really when?
