The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I know this has probably been talked to death but what was the controversy with Hilary Clinton and a private email server? Something about Benghazi and some people claiming there was a cover up or something?

The Secretary of State's E-Mails are supposed to be public record and managed on the State Department's servers.

However, those servers are old tech, underfunded, and unsecure and unreliable because Congress keeps slashing the State Department's budget, preventing them from upgrading to much more modern and secure systems.

So, Mrs. Clinton, along with the vast majority of other Secretaries of State, apparently, conduct a large amount of their State Department business on a much more secure, efficient, and privately owned server.

Clinton just got caught doing it.

IIRC.

The Bengzhai issue is that conspiracy theorists believe there's a smoking gun on her server that holds all the black buried history of the Bengzhai attack that's not *really* being shown to the public.

Short version is that the government email server blows so people use personal emails.

Republicans have singled out Clinton as being a traitor for doing so because she's Clinton and there were emails on her personal server about Benghazi that reveal literally nothing we didn't already know.

Benghazi is a weird one because there is a legit thing about there not being enough protection and precautions not being taken when the US was actively using special forces in the area, thing is most of that goes back to Congressional budget cutting (you'll notice that that comes up a lot when shit falls apart) and decisions made by people lower down the food chain, more then decisions made by Clinton herself.

Um, actually I am not sure if budget cuts had anything to do with Benghazi.

What is happening there is that a legitimate issue has turned into nothing more than a partisan witch-hunt.

You may be right, while it's been claimed the claim is being called false, cuts (or more specifically a lack of full funding) did happen but they weren't responsible.[1] Instead the blame is being put on "decisions by upper management".

Plus more than one Republican commentator has outright admitted that the whole thing is being dragged out to try and torpedo Clinton's potential run for the Oval Office.

The real investigation into Benghazi was concluded a few months after the event. Behind the scenes, Republicans saw it as a perfect opportunity to preemptively discredit Hillary Clinton in her presumed 2016 presidential bid. As she was, even then, polling as the Democrats' most likely candidate, the chance to get her indicted or at least tie her up in an interminable scandal was too good to pass up.

The rest is them doing what inquisitors do best: take entirely commonplace, benign behavior and spin it to make it look sinister.

Moving to another topic for a bit, but can anyone confirm the validity of this?

TEXAS STRIPS PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF HIV PREVENTION FUNDING WITHOUT WARNING

''The State of Texas continued its scorched-earth strategy in dealing with Planned Parenthood this week by stopping more than half a million dollars in federal funding the organization uses for HIV prevention and screening across the Greater Houston area.

That money, some $600,000 every year, comes from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention but is administered by state health officials. And for nearly three decades, that money has gone to Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast to fund HIV testing and counseling, condom distribution and referral services to connect anyone who has the virus with specialized care.

That will end on December 31, when the organization's current contract is set to expire, according to a tersely worded letter Planned Parenthood received late Monday from the Texas Department of State Health Services. “There will be no further renewals of this contract,” the letter states, without further explanation.''

[down][down] Fixed.

[up][up] Please add context to your links so people don't have to click out to get the gist.

Texas is apparently refusing to renew Planned Parenthood's contract with the state to receive $600,000 in annual HIV prevention funding from the Centers for Disease Control. This is in addition to having previously kicked the group off of Medicaid reimbursement.

In the stupid versus evil debate, it's not even a contest for Texas Republicans.

And tell me if I'm completley wrong about this (I probably am), but would Trump be able to do something like in It Cant Happen Here, where he declares a "state of emergency", and then suspends Congress and therefore becomes a dictator?

I'm sure there's probably some sort of super emergency it's WW3 and the Russians have taken Miami and New York kinda protocol for that but the odds of anyone listening to him in that situation are nonexistent.

I really can't imagine that scenario ending with anything other than Trump's death and a military coup.

[up][up] Related: A high school friend of mine's dad was convinced that Obama was using the Syrian refugee crisis as an excuse to bring over terrorists so that he could declare martial law and suspend the 2016 elections so he could stay on as president. My dad told him how unrealistic that scenario was.

Well, Trump is exactly the sort of guy who would manufacture some kind of crisis to get himself declared Supreme Dictator through suspension of democracy. That people can't see this, but can imagine Obama doing it, is a symptom of genuine mental illness.
