The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Which is why no one actually did the whole "20 paces and draw" thing... they used cover or they just shot each other in bars.

And probably got hanged a week later because even in the old west murder was illegal.

Han wasn't the best example (he's too nihilistic and unambitious), but a lot of American culture (and especially American Conservatism) revolves around the sort of "Frontiersman" mentality. Capitalism, also, I think stems from this sort of thinking (Entrepreneurs being the Frontiersman of the Market, essentially).

So the former Grand Wizard of the KKK, David Duke, has said that Donald Trump speaks "more radically" than he does.

EDIT: Salon articles don't seem to work on this forum, even with a URL shortener.

He basically agrees with him, though he says that Trump should tone some of it down.

“I don’t agree with everything he says, he speaks a little more, actually he speaks a little more, a lot more radically than I talk. And I think that’s a positive and negative.”

Kinda makes me wonder how Trump might react to that. Somehow, I doubt it would be Your Approval Fills Me with Shame, since Trump has absolutely no concept of shame.

Not like this is the first time Duke has spoken in support of Trump

David Duke, the anti-Semitic former Ku Klux Klan leader, praised Republican front-runner Donald Trump for his immigration policy proposals and said Trump is "the best of the lot."

After ranting about "Jewish supremacy" and Jewish domination of the media, Duke took time out of two of his radio programs last week to talk up Trump's candidacy as a "great thing," praising the Republican candidate's plan to deport the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

"Trump is really — he's really going all out. He's saying what no other Republicans have said, few conservatives say. And he's also gone to the point where he says it's not just illegal immigration, it's legal immigration," Duke said last week on his radio show, also pointing to Trump's plan to put more restrictions on work visas to ensure Americans are hired before foreigners. Buzzfeed News first reported the comments on Tuesday.

Duke, who previously served in the Louisiana statehouse and ran for U.S. Senate in that state, did not endorse Trump and said Trump remains untrustworthy for his "deep Jewish connections" and support for Israel.

Trump, whose daughter Ivanka converted to Judaism and is religiously observant, has been very vocal about his support for Israel and has slammed President Barack Obama's administration for strained relations with the Israeli government.

That story's from August, so the nutjobs and racists have been gathered around this for a long time.

Insisting that you have a gun just in case riots break out is a pretty silly argument if you ask me. Statistically ,you're more likely to die from falling down the stairs.

But we need to ensure that those who choose to have them are competent in firearms storage, maintenance, use and laws around them, trained in deescalation and use of force procedures and are mentally competent. The amount of gun deaths, be they suicides, homicides or accidents, in the US from perfectly legal guns is staggering and proof that at least some gun owners are in no way reasonable.

It may be a hard concept for the younger generations to grasp, with their blogs and Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, broadcasting every unexpurgated detail of their daily lives to the world at large, but I believe in an individual's right to privacy. There are certain aspects of my life that prefer to keep to myself — not because I'm doing anything wrong, but simply because I don't think anybody else has a need to know.

This includes the government. I don't want Big Brother watching me, regulating everything I do, and I shouldn't have to apply for a Certificate of Mother-May-I to go about my business. That is also a prominent American viewpoint.

Pwiegle, you're asking us to be incredibly paranoid about the idea that violence might break out at any time. Which is both unrealistic and incredibly unhealthy as a way to deal with our neighbors. Riots are actually fairly rare in this country, so the idea that we absolutely should be prepared for them (particularly since a lot of us don't even live in places famous for riots) is kind of asinine on your part. As is the whole "well next time you're in a riot" comment.

And thinking that someone who wants to wield a tool whose only function is killing things is somehow "restrictive' or a function of "Big Brother watching you" also sounds kind of paranoid. The idea that you need to be educated and regularly tested in how you use a gun is quite reasonable, given how often people apparently can't use them competently. You can put that under the whole "why we can't have nice things" because enough people screw up that new regulations seem necessary.

I'm not being paranoid. I related the worst incident that ever happened to me in my entire life, and you apparently mistook it for a regular occurrence. That's Anecdotal Fallacy, I believe.

I like guns, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I like them so much, I went to gunsmithing school to learn all about them. I made it my life's work, for a while, until simple economics dictated otherwise. I suppose the reason you all seem to misunderstand me so badly is that I've expressed myself poorly. For which I apologize. But that's all I'll apologize for.

There's a certain symmetry to it. If we're all the product of our upbringing and conditioning, then nobody is really responsible for any misdeeds. It's all the fault of our parents and their parents, the environment, random chance, etc.

We're all the result of our upbringing, so no one is truly responsible (uniquely so) for their own actions.

However, when it comes to matters of law, this is a nonsequitor. Because crime and punishment is a matter of dictating law in such a way that society takes responsibility by guiding human behavior in the proper direction. EG, "I don't care if you're uniquely responsible for your actions-we have a No Being A Dick Or You Get Punished law to guide you into not being a dick."

The justice system doesn't need to be about justice, it needs to be about building a better society. EG, use whatever works.

Of course, what "works" is subjective, and those with afluenza would argue that what "works" is them being allowed to do whatever the @!#$ they want whereas the rest of the world is a buncha derpensteins, but that's not a pretty compelling position I would think.
