Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hey, watch me be an insufferable prick and do the following:
Are you telling me the prison system is flawed, full of death, and dangerous to be in? Let me file this under my "Sherlock" file on the "no shit" drawer. (For future reference please ask for the "No shit, Sherlock" address to my secretary)
Here are statistics made by the Bureau of Justice Statistics
, and I want to point you out table 7 where it details how black people are more likely to die by homicide in prison than white people in prison, whereas white people are more likely to die by suicide than literally anything else.
This isn't politicized, this isn't an opinion article, these are just raw numbers. So if you look at these and you tell me there is not an issue of race here that is important to reduce those numbers, and that it is not more possible for it to happen to black people than it is to white people, and that it is then not worth it to bring about attention to these cases, then I am just going to shrug this one out.
People will die in prison, and they die in prison, and this is followed statistically. This is an inherent flaw of the current judicial system of the United States and many other countries. And yet it affects black people way more than it does white people in the United States. So bringing it to light is an important step to realizing this.
And yet the important thing here is who makes the headlines? That's absurd.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesIf a white woman was pulled over for little to no reason, assaulted by the policeman who did so, then died in jail under mysterious circumstances? Yeah, I think it would make headlines.
Of course, the scenario tends to play out a little differently if she's white. It goes more like: woman gets assaulted
, doesn't die in custody, gets awarded $550,000 when she sues the department
, while one of the officers involved is fired, the other suspended, and their captain demoted
.
So black woman gets dead and nobody is held accountable
, white woman gets paid more than half a million for a minor injuries and the cops are disciplined.
I wonder why there was such a difference...

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |So, in Scenario A, we have a woman who violates a minor law about using her cell phone while driving, gets snippy with cops including cursing them out, gets beaten, people get outraged, the police settle the complaint for over half a million dollars, the cops involved get disciplined, (the one fired being a 22 year veteran) and so does their commanding officer.
In Scenario B, we have a woman who violates a minor law about signaling before changing lanes while driving, gets snippy with the cop who pulled her over, gets beaten, dies in prison, and there's no need for anyone to be disciplined or held accountable. The cop is still working for the department
, despite prior issues with bad conduct
.
So apparently, cuts and bruises on a white woman are a more worthy cause to discipline the authorities than the death of a black woman.
Man, it sure is too bad for white people that they have it so rough compared to black people. (I say as someone defined as white by the US.)
Edit:
... do you really think police forces are commonly in the practice of firing officers, especially veteran officers, just to settle a complaint? Because they fight tooth and nail to avoid ever publicly disciplining officers. If you think otherwise... then I'm just not sure how to discuss the issue with you.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |They might not like having officers with a reasonably good record, makes others look bad by comparison. Plus police departments love screwing cops out of money, a 22 year vet might be close to retirement, but if he's fired he's not gonna get a pension is he?

Is that happening in Cincinnati? It would be hilarious if so.

I'm rather cynical of PC culture myself, but that's so silly that there just has to be more to it then what we're hearing.
Leviticus 19:34Here's a thing
A bunch of stupid college kids does not have the political pull or power as American cops, who has a history of racism, or an American political party, who are more than happy to support banning brown people from entering the country.
So this white Christmas ban is nothing to get upset about as it won't go anywhere.
@ Skycobra: It contains the word "white", apparently.

Keep Rolling OnSo, getting back to the Refugee crisis, there are reports that 70% of Syrians in Lebanon (disproving the trite "Why aren't their neighbors doing anything!?" crap I've heard recently) are currently subsisting on less than $3.84 a day, which is the line for Extreme Poverty there
.
And on a related note, a German man invited a total of 24 refugees to stay with him and his partner, and related his "disappointing" experience on Facebook
. And to clarify now, the "disappointing" comes attached to a Sarcasm Mode so large it would outdo the Comic Book Guy.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
When people say "why aren't their neighbors doing anything", they are usually referring to the Gulf states, which are filthy rich, and yet have taken almost no refugees.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.A fair amount works its way to the citizenry, it's how the Gulf States have avoided unrest in part, they literally gave everyone like $100 at the start of the Arab Spring, so as to keep people happy and from getting any ideas.

It only seems to be a big issue if it happens to anybody that's black. Or it could just be the Media latching on to what gives it better ratings.
