Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's nothing wrong with attention raising, but I'm not gonna go jumping on every band waggon that comes along.
And while there are some groups I do support, BLM is definitely not one of them.
Cue angry comments about being racist in 3...2..1...

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair."Instead of a crispy baguette with grilled pork, pate, pickled vegetables and fresh herbs, the sandwich used ciabatta bread, pulled pork and coleslaw. “It was ridiculous,” Nguyen said. “How could they just throw out something completely different and label it as another country’s traditional food?”"
Yes indeed, how dare they appropriate a dish from another country, Why, if they used, lets say, a baguette and claimed it wasn't French, there would be outrage! Hang on a second...
Some of their supporters like to characterize the issue as if cops everywhere will murder a black person at the slightest provocation and tend to come off very much as anti-police rather than looking for reform.
Their interference with rallies of those who actually support them(including Bernie Sanders) also rubs some people the wrong way.

I'm baaaaaaackHaving someone else faulty claim that some shit they threw together is an item from your culture and history isn't fun, if nothing else it's anoying to be lied to about what something is.
Someone Rick Rolled with a fake Trump withdrawal vid a bit back, it's like that, having a person tell you that some you want is happening and then it turns out to be fake bullshit.
It's not a massive deal, but it's still shitty.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@Silsaw I'm well aware of Vietnam's colonial history. Claiming Cultural appropriation of a dish that itself involves components is pretty hypocritical is what I'm saying.
Saying it's shit is a fine response. Getting annoyed about it is fine. "Cultural appropriation" is a bit much. It's not like they put down Haggis and called it Vietnamese. They made an attempt at a Vietnamese dish and it was shit.
They make crap pasta with a bad sauce and they don't use any garlic, I'm not going to say "They're appropriating my culture!" I'm going to say "These fuckers can't even make sauce right".
And I won't be surprised because it's a cafeteria. Cafeteria is almost ALWAYS shit.

I'm baaaaaaackI wouldn't call that an attempt, seems more like strait up false advertisement to me.
I agree that calling it cultural appropriation is silly, but the basic point that they're falsely claiming food is from another culture when they're clearly just throwing random shit together, that's legit.
Maybe I've just heard enough stories about "traditional English food" places not even being able to do fish and chips, but if I went somewhere and they pretended a dish was from my culture that wasn't I'd complain. I wouldn't call it cultural appropriation but I'd still complain.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI hear that a lot actually. I have a similar relation with Capozzelli.
"Instead of a crispy baguette with grilled pork, pate, pickled vegetables and fresh herbs, the sandwich used ciabatta bread, pulled pork and coleslaw. " That's the dish of contention, they substituted things rather poorly, but there was an attempt.

I'm baaaaaaackGoing back to Jack's link a couple of pages back, from what I understand, it's a radicalization of the left in order to, as these people think, to get control back of the world from the radicalized right. A fight fire with fire sort of situation. Which never leads to anything good...
As for cafeteria food, I always felt school cafeteria food got better as you got older. Mind, my high school was the only one in the distroct and had a somewhat choice on what you could eat if you could stomach the lines.
Also, I hated the cardboard elementary school pizza.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Having gone to public school, Pizza was variable. My high school made it decent for my first year or so, but after that, and in the schools before it, describing it as a tomato scrapped on cardboard and covered with cheese would be generous.
Old-Dominos's atrocity that they though they could call pizza was almost better(though credit where credit is due, it's worlds better now)
I'm baaaaaaackPizza for the most part was a sure thing in my highschool, and better than the alternatives. Though it was kind of nasty if you had the misfortune of being first in line, since they were still serving the previous lunches pizza.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.School pizza in middle school was this horrible whole-wheat concoction with this horribly gummy cheese and tomato sauce that I suspected was secretly red paint. I ate a roll with butter almost every day for lunch (exceptions were rare and usually the BBQ Rib sandwich)
I didn't have the high school pizza, because it was open campus so I could just go to one of the ten pizza places in walking distance.
I think the best pizza I had was when I was up in Boston visiting my Uncle and went to an Italian Pizzeria run by Albanians. They made some damn good food there.
On a side note: Some of the best Fish and Chips I had was in Maine.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.Basically, the radical right arose in response to the moderate left being given a voice on the national stage for the first time in decades.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

What's wrong with attention raising? You guys seem to ignore some serious shit.
Unless you mean personal attention, then I'd ask who the hell is getting personally famous over BLM?
