Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Oh please, this country built nuclear reactors, and a space program (that is probably a cover for Ballistic Missile testing), not to mention a large supply of qualified engineers. I doubt they need any help building dams, and especially not from the US's broken ass infrastructure. And Iran could use this as a way to attack the US in the event that a war already took place. And Iran has launched many attacks against us in the past, killing our troops in Iraq being the most recent, and that has never led to war. Why would they think this was any different, especially since the US is in retreat from the region, and it would be difficult to prove Iran was responsible.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. Its a Dam. If it was a silo, then you could freak out.
But if their hacking is that big a problem, we should hack them back and spam their servers with the most vile porn known to man as well as penis enlargement ads.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair. No, were pivoting to Asia, and the Obama administration has clearly shown the, in some ways admirable, belief that we should not intervene in the Middle East. Not to mention the fact that most of our allies don't trust us since we supported the overthrow of Mubarak, the Saudi's still haven't forgiven us for "betraying" him.

What exactly could they do to the dam, my understanding was that hackers could cause breaches in dams or something like that, or damage the power generators.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Tech is tech, China steals US tech all the time, I'm pretty sure we once tried to steal the French aircraft carrier designs, people try and steal tech even if they don't technically need it to make their own.
Sure I guess, but they've no reason to, I mean they might even use it as retaliation if you shoot down one of their civilian airliners in their airspace with one of your ships that is trespassing in their territorial waters, again.
Most developed countries could fuck with each other's infrastructure if they wanted to, it's part of how the modern age works, nobody worries about it because nobody has reason to do it, even in the event of a war launching an attack aimed only at your enemies civilians is a sure fire way to piss them off and get everyone gunning for you.
Because it would be a provable attack upon the US itself instead of just troops oversees. Plus Iran's actions in Iraq were supporting groups that attacked the US, not attacking the US itself. When has launching an attack upon the US on its home soil ever worked out for anyone? You guys tolerate shit abroad but you do not fuck about if someone brings it home.
Also difficult to prove Iran was responsible my arse, you proved it this time didn't you? Plus who else would it be? It takes the abilities of a developed nation to do such an attack, sure that's a long list, but the list of nations with that capability that are for some reason crazy enough to do such a thing? That's a list of zero currently, if the list gets anyone on it then you'll know who did it or you'll have far bigger problems.
Edit: On China, everyone my arse, a few people on here have at times overacted to your assumption that China is gonna take over the world and declared that China is gonna imploded, but it's a few overreactions, not everyone.

Well China does love giving us the finger when it comes to copyright infringement, human rights and Climate Change.
On the bright side, at least we Americans don't have to wear gas masks to go outside and import water.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.I think people are probably overstating how doomed China is, but if we go with that narrative shouldn't Korea, Japan, Russia, and maybe some EU countries also be fucked? Or is the demographic issue not as bad when you have an already developed economy? WTF is going to happen to northern Eurasia in the next few generations?

Actually they have been trying to clean up their act on climate change, especially under Xi. Why would they want to end the world when their about to take it over

At least for Russia, Knit keeps insisting the fears of demographic doom are vastly overstated. For China, their demographic apocalypse is the result of the one child policy.
