The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I've been hearing a rumour that Donald Trump owns the following companies (all of which have branches in Saudi Arabia): "Center Point", "CityMax", "Home Center", and "Life Style". Is this true? I can't seem to find anything substantial on the Internet.

[up][up] Maybe not, but Trump may (or used to) sell "Trump Home" products at those stores.

Also many of thos companies are public so Trump could possibly have stock in them.

Obama viewing his presidency as having some kind of historical mandate is hardly unusual in American politics or in politics in general. I happen to be of the school of thought that there is no determinism to history, no present path that we are destined to follow. It's all a narrative that we impose upon events that happen of their own accord.

Moreover, I agree that it is dangerous to assume that the natural course of events is to progress towards greater freedom, greater opportunity, greater prosperity. That can create a dangerous blindness to the forces of fear that work to tear down everything that has been built.

[up] I never said Obama was unique in this. The article itself points out examples of other Presidents using that sort of rhetoric.

Wonder how long it will take for the RNC to convince Jeb to drop out and put all their support behind Rubio. They are in deep if Trump or Cruz takes the primary.

I frankly think Jeb has better legs from an actual experience perspective than Rubio, even if the latter is better at campaigning. Too many republicans I know see Rubio as basically Republican!Obama and they don't want that (at least, those who worry about experience over checkboxes).

The RNC has a very small pool of barely electable candidates, they can't afford to be picky.

Rubio has all but abandoned his day job to go on the campaign trail, yet I still have seen little in the way of ground game or enthusiasm for him. Jeb's campaign has dick all to show for its tens of millions in spending.

Hillary Clinton is going to be a grandma again.

The Iranians hacked a dam in Rye New York. I live in Rye!! They gained knowledge as to how the dam works, but chose not to do anything. Most likely they are seeking a way to inflict pain should diplomatic relations go sour, or if the Revolutionary Guards wish to spoil the Presidents improvement of relations with the US by launching an attack.

[up] Do the Iranians want a gold star or something for a hacking a Dam? Whoop-dee-fucking-doo, the Chi-Coms they are not, they should stick to making Persian rugs and giving the IAEA the finger.

Oh please, Iran isn't looking to start a war, which is exactly what making a dam fail would do. They'll have been trying to get into on the dam, possibly because they want to be able to build similar dams themselves.

Iran has no interest in a war with anyone. That's the entire reason they're building nukes in the first place.

To avoid the possibility of war ever again.

Oh really when?

Well yeah, if (and it's a big if) they are after nukes it's because they're afraid that the US and UK might stage another coup in Iran so that BP can have Iran's oil.

The US's digital security really is pretty shit, though. It's much harder to defend against that sort of thing (as in, more expensive and requires more expertise) than it is to launch that sort of attack, but still — it's been public knowledge for a while that things like our energy grid are woefully inept at computer security.

My father was an electrical engineer for a utility company, and he said you could black out a good-sized town or part of a major city without ever going near the power plant itself. And this was in the days before the internet, so computer security doesn't even enter the picture. The method is still viable today.

I won't reveal the exact details, but he said all you would need is a set of bolt cutters and a wrench.

While I'm sure that's true (as a result of the physics involved in the electrical grid), that doesn't change the fact that the US's digital security it shitty.
