Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, I gotta concur. Hence my consistent rooting for O'Malley on that count - we need to make sure that whoever takes the veep slot will be a good candidate in 2024, and we need to start training them for the job.
As for working together between Sanders and Clinton, not sure, really. For better or for worse, Clinton is the candidate of Wall Street and Goldman Sachs, while Sanders would likely try to put Krugman on the Federal Reserve and appoint an Attorney General specifically to start throwing bankers in jail. And new solutions about the economy and Wall Street are Sanders' particular thing - if he's not appointed to a position that allows him to carry those out, then what would Clinton do with him?

I'm not referring to his suitability as a ticket-balancer - honestly, I think ticket balance is overrated right now. I think that of the existing individuals we've seen, he's the best available 2024 candidate and I want him to get some exposure for that.
Also, I really don't think that the Republicans can use the African-American community to attack O'Malley. What are they going to do, steal the black vote by promising...to make it easier for Baltimore police to crack down on them?
As for getting in a minority candidate...I honestly don't see any veepable minorities right now. Any specific candidates you had in mind?
Does the constitution say the veep has to be prez-eligible? It would definitely subvert the purpose of the VP (which is to take over if #1 can't finish the term of office), and would also be a very dumb idea because your VP is your party and there's a decent chance that third in line, the Speaker, is not, but i don't think there's actually anything stopping you.
Yes, the Constitution explicitly states that the Vice President must be eligible to be President.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The Constitution cannot govern the American empire.
Normally I just kind of lurk this thread, having posted a handful of the times in the past, but I feel like I've gotta say something here.
I read that article earlier this morning, and no, that's not what it says. The article mentions some weird jurisdictional quirks/issues/loopholes/idiosyncrasies (which are certainly bad and need fixing) and discusses them, but it doesn't imply that the Constitution is fundamentally unable to govern the American periphery. At least, that's not how I read it.

I know this is missing the point a bit, but is Ted Cruz actually Canada born like the article states or is it another "birther" conspiracy like with Obama?
EDIT: The article about it linked in the original states he is, but his mother was a US Citizen which makes him American by birth, regardless of where it happened, if I'm understanding right.

Actually, yes. Cruz was born in Canada, and openly admits it. However, he is eligible to run since he was born a US citizen.
I have seen at least one Conservative pundit note the irony (he was making fun of birthers, though).
Leviticus 19:34Cruz is an American for the same reason that Obama is an American; their mothers were both American citizens. Of course Obama was actually born in the US, but don't let that get in the way of a good conspiracy.
Also, apparently Jimmy Carter's 28 year old grandson Jeremy has died suddenly. Carter revealed the death at his Church and went on to teach Sunday school as usual.
