Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It always baffles me whenever I'm reminded that anti-vaxxers are crazy liberals rather than crazy conservatives.
Must be because I subconsciously associate anti-vax with "religious taboo" instead of "hippie stuff".

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Eh, anti vaxxers come from both sides. You do have all natural hippie granola lovers, but you also have your anti-science, doctors and scientists are nothing but eggheads, it's all probably a conspiracy by the government and the Illuminati anyways and all we need is the Bible and God types.
There's a reason why only Republican candidates have voiced doubt about vaccines or done little things to not ruffle feathers with that crowd. (See Christie, Rand Paul, etc.)

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |The right-wing anti-vaxxers tend to be religiously motivated and to combine their stance on vaccinations with a reliance on faith healing. Left-wing anti-vaxxers are paranoid about "big business" in the form of "big medicine" conspiring to conceal the harmful effects of their products. Same result, very different motivation, and the two do not get along.
Republican candidates can't talk badly about left-wing anti-vaxxers because to do so would piss off their own anti-science constituents. But here's the key difference: there are no Democratic candidates pandering to that portion of their voter base; in fact, every candidate that I've seen take a stance on the matter has strongly criticized them.
We call out our idiots; we don't celebrate them.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Nah, there've been quite a few Democrats telling people to STFU and get their kids vaccinated.
Edit: It just doesn't come up on the national stage very often because all the serious candidates know better. We don't empower our crazies by paying attention to them.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And Jenny McCarthy should be arrested and charged with attempted genocide. That she can endorse this insanity without consequence is taking freedom of speech too far.
Of course, they don't just kill their own children, they inflict a lot of ancillary harm by transmitting disease to children who have legitimate medical reasons to avoid vaccines.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"While we're at it, can we charge parents who refuse to seek medical treatment for children with cancer because they insist on praying the cancer away with child endangerment too?
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. That's just plain old stupidity on the parents part, but yeah, we totally should.
On the same note, should do the same for those idiotic parents that buy into natural healing. Fat lot of good its going to do if you have smallpox or somethin.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.DNC penalizes Sanders campaign for a data breach the Sanders campaign previously warned them about
.
I don't like the timing of this.
That's right, boys. Mondo cool.Yeah, I saw that headline. Makes me wonder. The DNC is not exactly handling itself with integrity in this nominating process.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That sums up my thoughts on anti-vaxxers left&right.
Not only will they be killing their kids rather than themselves, they'll be killing the kids of other people. The kids whose health was too delicate or immune system is too weak to take the shot. The ones who are allergic to ingredients used therein. Etc.
Right now those kids are protected because everyone around them is immune and cannot be a carrier and unknowingly give it to them. Once the percentage of people who are immune isn't high enough for them to be safe, you'll see things like the Disney measles outbreak becoming more common.
But I suppose to the anti-vaxxers who believe the "vaccines cause autism" bullshit dead kids are better than autistic ones.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Hmmm...come to think of it that passage does fit the anti-vaxxers thoughts rather well.
And I suppose it'd be like bashing your head against the wall when trying to explain Autism is a birth defect, not caused by vaccination.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair. And there's the bad luck that signs of autism generally start to show up right about the time that the first round of vaccinations are done on infants, which throws further fuel on the fire for the nutcases.

Sure there is. It's just not as popcorn-munching dramatic as on the Republican side. We'd probably like there to be a bit more of it, though, and I'll definitely concede the point of the DNC trying to march Hillary to victory without any serious media attention. Still, I'd be largely satisfied with either of the two major Democratic candidates winning the nomination, and so would most of the party's voters to judge by the polls.
