Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Truth hurts? I don't know what else I can say. I'm not going to adopt a stereotypical drawl or speak in small words just to assuage someone's political sensibilities.
Yes, I believe that the left's overall position is both better informed and more moral. Obviously, I believe that or I wouldn't support it. Which is not to say that the left is pristine; there are some pretty colossal idiots over here that I'd happily get rid of if I could (anti-vaxxers, anti-GMO'ers, nihilistic environuts).

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It is the greatest achievement of the American Right to convince people that reality itself is subjective; that yelling nonsense loudly enough and often enough can make it true despite all evidence to the contrary.
In this, it is not breaking new ground, but rather gathering to itself all the people who reject facts in favor of their own reality. We see that quite obviously in the Republican primary.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Doesn't everyone believe that they are better informed and more moral than their political opponents? Taking a position on anything necessitates that you think people with the opposite position are misinformed, at the very least.
I assume you're just matching stupid hyperbole with stupid hyperbole to make a point, though. In which case, cool.

Which is where we need to fall back to independent, objective studies of those facts. For example, Ted Cruz' blatantly cherry-picked data about global climate change.
But Bense is most definitely using stupid hyperbole.

Not just this thread; anything that mentions China is sure to have plenty of hyperbole.
But aren't a lot of scientists brought and paid for?

Keep Rolling OnDon't mind me, I'm just hiding in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber until this hyperbolic discussion of hyperbole is finished.

. Middle way ftw.
Honestly, I do find it annoying to be labeled left or right even though I also understand that it's like a psychological shortcut.
Just wish that it would be more left center right, instead of only left and right.

Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.Quite. To not make a choice is choosing for things to continue in whatever direction they're going. For the majority to remain major and the minority to remain minor.

The main reason I don't take a stance, is that my views don't really fall in line with either side.
I sure as hell can't be Republican if I support legalizing marijuana, gay marriage, abortion(though only in cases of incest and rape), and allowing the Syrian Refugees in.
I sure as hell can't be Democrat if I want tougher anti-illegal immigration laws, support gun ownershp, despise the idea of national healthcare, and think the whole idea of white privilege is a crock of shit.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair. It is dismally disappointing to me that so many people don't understand the Electoral College, especially if they call for reform just because their guy didn't win.
Every time there's a presidential election there are a score of articles trying to explain it to the public again. It's not rocket science, folks.
True, it's not a perfect solution, but no solution in democracy is, and I certainly prefer it to a straight popular vote.
*Raises hand* I certainly do! After all, it's not the left who has presidential candidates stating that they're in favor of torture
.
It's not the left that advocates genocide and carpet bombing
.
It's not the left that tries to convince other countries to make being gay a death sentence offense
or spends their time worshipping a homophobic dictator
.
It's not left leaders or candidates who talk about Syria being Iran's route to the sea
, or say that part of their foreign policy would be being a better friend to a King Hussein of Jordan
, despite the fact that King Hussein died in '99, or that their strategy for North Korea would be to put Putin in a box
, or are wrong on every single fact about what they say they will do with the military
, etc.
So yeah, while I roll my eyes plenty of times at fellows leftists and there are certainly individual issues and subjects where I may give it to righties, I've gone from being raised in a strongly right wing household and being one of those middle way, both sides have a point people into flat out disgust for what passes for the right wing these days in the US, especially among right wing leadership. It took me almost 30 years to get to that point, but I was eventually pushed there, whether I wanted to be or not.

As far as the question of the morality of the American Left goes, there is the distinction that, of the two camps of Left and Right, the Left is the only one that makes the construction of a universal moral paradigm an ideological imperative.
Welcome to the light side. We have crumpets. Also, I hope you like arguments over tedious minutiae.
