Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I thought I might tune in to see what's going on, then immediately was hit with George Pataki rhapsodizing about radical Islam and how Obama's refusing to call it what it is. I turned it off.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I don't think it's problematic at all. In fact, the "Radical" part is the point-they're describing radical Muslims, not all Muslims.

"fucking ykw" running for prez is the best thing that ever could have happened to Hillary.
A year ago, my mantra was: "Anyone But Hillary." Now, I've changed my mind. Compared to a certain orange-haired orangutan, Hillary becoming POTUS doesn't sound so bad.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Clinton kind of scares me, to be honest. But she has by far the most political capital and just regular old capital of any Democrat, so she can rally the base way more than Sanders can. Trump won't be able to survive running against her, and I don't see the Republicans being able to produce a viable substitute. So yeah. Hilary for 2016. Kinda skeptical of how she'll turn out, but that's who it's gonna be.
Hillary is a focus-group built billionaire careerist with the fakest winning smile I've ever seen. When She Smiles, I feel fear and mistrust.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Obama doesn't want to use radical Islam because fundamentally, the mentality of "islamic" terrorists is a gross distortion of Islam, and it offers them legitimization they don't deserve. Add that to the fact that they're trying to have the Islamic community be on board with snuffing this kind of thing out, and it's just a good idea not to use the term Islamic Terrorism™ whether that's an accurate description or not.
Objectively and in a vacuum, "Radial Islam" is absolutely the correct term to use and it seems ridiculous that Obama and the left are avoiding it.
But in the context of the current political climate and American culture it's obviously just a dog whistle that means anyone brown should be lynched.
Oh really when?Look at this look at this the current top news of Google USA:
Timothy Peake
Arvind Kejriwal
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Star Wars
Saudi Arabia
Iran
World Trade Organization
United States Congress
High school
NASA
I do not ever want to see ykw in this list.
Edit: Ah shit, he's back. Grr...

Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. If we make this a war against Islam, radical or otherwise, we will lose. It's a war against terrorism. Those on the right who use the term "radical Islam" see themselves as fighting an existential conflict between Western and Islamic cultures. It's a jingoistic dog whistle.
Ask any of these folks on the GOP side if they are willing to commit the resources that it would take to properly sort out the mess: between a quarter and a half-million troops occupying Syria and Iraq for the next ten to twenty years.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I really want to try to make the argument that they're not advocating or supporting genocide, but this is virtually the same rhetoric from the lead-up to the holocaust so I really can't.
It's just inane that one of our two major political parties is increasingly behaving like the early nazi party.
EDIT- meant but say insane but fuck it, that works too.
