The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I keep hearing these "Trump is a Democrat plant" theories but people fail to realize that even if it were true, they only led the GOP camel. Not the Dems' fault that the GOP camel willingly drank the Trump water.

Honestly, if Trump were a plant by Clinton, I'd kind of have to admire her cunning in turning the worst parts of the GOP against itself. Would it qualify her as a Magnificent Bastard?

I don't believe Trump is a democrat plant. However, if he was he'd be doing a very good job, so it might as well be true.

It's also a stupidly long con job. It wasn't as severe but Trump has been like this for years.

So there's a story going around now that someone shouted "Set the motherfucker on fire!" and "sieg heil!" in reference to a Black Lives Matter protestor being dragged out of a Trump rally.

One article on it.

Trump and his supporters must really terrify the Republican establishment.

It's a given he'll scare everyone outside the GOP. Scaring the GOP is the most significant, politically, at the moment. however.

So much for Rubio being the moderate face of the Rebublican Party. Disappointed.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

Rubio had a reputation for being more moderate in immigration matters (so as long as it was politically viable on that side of the political spectrum), he's fairly orthodox in all other aspects.

Rubio's always been a Tea Party darling. He got his Senate seat by primarying out a moderate Republican (who ran as an independent anyway, and split the vote — between him and the Democrat running). The only thing where he hasn't toed the Tea Party line from the start is on immigration, and that's because a good part of his base are Cuban-Americans, who want their family members that are still living in Cuba to be able to immigrate.

Rubio was never a moderate. He's a Tea Partier through and through, with his only break from party orthodoxy being his attempt at immigration reform. (And the reaction to that vs. the reaction to Trump's ravings should say a lot about the Republican base.)

What Rubio has been good at has been putting on a facade of reasonableness and saying horrific policies in a calm, measured tone instead of sounding like an Ax-Crazy nutcase. But the difference between a random Tea Party politician and Rubio is virtually nil.

Which is precisely what terrifies me about Rubio. I'm of the opinion that he's consciously and deliberately riding the Tea Party wave, and probably won't have much problem pivoting to a more moderate position when that support runs dry (or crashes and burns catastrophically). Rubio's not a moderate in terms of his policy positions, but he's dangerous because he's very good at walking the line between "too moderate to appeal to the Tea Party" and "too radical to appeal to traditional Republicans", in demeanor if not in deed.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

When I watched the video, I clearly heard the "Light the motherfucker on fire!" (and initially thought it was "monkey" when reading an article that put mo——), but I couldn't see or hear someone yelling "Sieg Heil". Also, there's people alleging it was another protester that had said it, not a Trump supporter, which I don't exactly buy given the open racism of the first guy.

As for Congress, I know they let the Zadroga Bill lapse back in October, which means that the 9/11 First Responders are effectively blowing in the wind when it comes to affording medical treatment. Already wrote a letter to my Congressman about it because it's fucking shameful to do that while still extolling "Never Forget".

I think most republicans are self-aware enough to not say seig-heil outloud.

If he had some neo-nazis in the crowd maybe, but otherwise it'd seem more like something a protester would say.

The Wanderer's point would mean that Rubio's appeal mostly overlaps with Carson, who has extreme views but is very measured in his delivery.

[up]

That's the crux of the problem, though - Trump is exactly the type of person that would attract neo-Nazis to one of his rallies. But as I said, I couldn't see or hear anyone saying that phrase, so I'm not sold entirely on it having been said at all. The whole "Light the motherfucker on fire" bit, though, is plain as day, and has only one probable source.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
