Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Don't know if people here have been following it, but the Guardian has been tracking the number of Americans killed by police in the last year: The Counted.
They've also done a five part series on the deadliest police forces in the United States: Kern County Sheriff's Office and Bakersfield Police Department.
- The County #1: The story of America's deadliest police.
- The County #2: Where deputies dole out rough justice.
- The County #3: Sexual assault and the price of silence.
- The County #4: Partners in crime.
- The County #5: What happens after police kill someone you love?
The whole thing is definitely worth a read - seriously hard-hitting stuff.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiHeh, a journalist from Le Petit Journal is following Trump's meetings this week. He met with Trump supporters who claimed to know Islam, read them Quran versets, and asked them if they found those offensive. Then when they agreed that they were, he revealed that those were actually Bible versets.
Cue some of them saying that they didn't like journalists because they always manipulated people. And others saying "it's in the Bible? Oh so it's OK".
I've heard about that. Unfortunately, most people are not trained in intellectual integrity and the idea of this sort of hypocrisy is lost on them, especially when they are participating in it. The Fox News club depends on it.

I saw a Youtube video where a similar stunt was pulled by a couple of Dutch guys (or were they Belgian? I don't know). The people they pulled it on were much more reasonable, though.
Ah, here it is.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Trump doctor breaks out superlatives for candidate's health.
"Mr. Trump has had a recent complete medical examination that showed only positive results," wrote Dr. Harold Bornstein, who has treated Trump since 1980. "Actually, his blood pressure, 110/65, and laboratory results were astonishingly excellent."
Earlier this month the 69-year-old real estate mogul had predicted his medical report would indicate "perfection" and Bornstein's assessment reflected that.
"If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency," the doctor's letter said.
The letter said Trump had lost 15 pounds in the past year, has never had cancer and has not had surgery since an appendectomy at age 10. He takes an aspirin daily and a low dose of statin, which is used to treat high cholesterol.
Replace "superlatives" with "suppositories" and you'd be closer to the truth.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. With the arrest thing, sometimes the accused is really uncooperative.
For example, a friend of mine (who isn't exactly my friend anymore due to me being the one called to bail her out without ever contacting her mother for help) got arrested for "harassment" at 3 AM, when a coworker who'd given her a ride decided to call the cops instead.
Bullshit situation all around, but the resisting arrest and disorderly conduct (kicked one of the cops and yelled outside at 3 AM) could easily stick, and she did not do herself any favors by responding to "So what are we doing out here tonight?" with "I don't know, ask him!" in a pissy tone. While it's understandable, it's shooting yourself in the foot when the officer's trying to get your side of the story without bias.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Theodore Roosevelt may have been bad in so respects, but, in other respects, he was bad.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Never had surgery in FIFTY NINE FUCKING YEARS!?
Also, I dont like the ableist (yes I'm using that word- I don't like it but its the most appropriate one) implications of Trump's trumped up health. How would he respond to a candidate like FDR if he were running now?
I'm pretty sure he's already mocked one wheelchair bound person this campaign.
Oh and is the Community Showcase part of the sidebar jumping out of the sidebar for anyone else?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI got a question. What do you think it would take to make people realize how insane the Republicans are and move away from them enough to destroy them as a party? Them being totally in charge and ruining everything?
I have a handful of "sayings" that I come up with that cover many situations, and one of them is "People ignore problems until they're too big to ignore." And my god, does that appear to be true again and again.

Okay that makes sense then.
