Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

lets call them what they are, terrorists
It has more or less happened. Just not in the US
. The perpetrators were thrown in jail.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.only difference is these people are white and Christian, and that makes it perfectly okay, they should be rotting in prison...
- sigh* you know what, this is probably one of the only circumstances I would support civilian ownership of firearms, the poor bastards the terrorists are trying to intimidate should get guns, they are clearly at the mercy of an armed terrorist organisation, their enemies are armed, they should do so likewise

advancing the front into TV TropesUh, yes? That's the whole point of police. The represent the government and are there to settle disputes and enforce the laws. Non-compliance is going to make things worse for you. If you do something wrong as a child, do things get better or worse if you argue with and insult your parents?
Unless a police officer is violating your rights there is no reason not to be compliant. They're just doing their job. Answer what they ask you. If you've done nothing wrong, or have a small issue(out head light, etc), they'll just let you go 9 times out of ten.
If you act like an asshole 90% of the time there's A- something the person is hiding or B- something they can find(obstructed vision, etc). It's not worth it.
If they're being actively abusive or violating your rights that's a totally different story. But almost every time I see an issue like this come up on video, the person pulled over had something incredibly minor and decided to fight with the officer over the issue.

I'm baaaaaaack"I understand where they're coming from," he said. "This wasn't supposed to happen. They were supposed to pick a governor, a senator, you know, a puppet, where they control him, 100 percent. This wasn't supposed to happen."
Pretty self-aware on his part.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
X5 Thing is the statement quoted makes no allowance for the idea that he might be wrong, that what he's doing might be illegal, saying "no you can't arrest me what you're doing is illegal" is just grounds for him to beet the shit out of you for daring to question him.
The police have the authority to enforce the law, not the authority to make you do whatever they feel like.
The line is "do what I tell you", not "do what I have legally told you to do", I'm allowed to disobey an illegal order from a police officer and he doesn't get to shoot me for it.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's interesting that Cruz is pushing ahead of Trump. It's not something that I would have predicted, necessarily, but neither is it surprising. The point is that each captures a different facet of the current GOP insanity. Cruz's seems to be rising now, but I do wonder what's causing Trump's to decline.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Increase in number of voters? We're getting closer to the primaries officially starting, so more and more primary voters will be paying attention.
Look at it this way, if there are 1,000 Republican primary voters but at the start only 400 are paying attention, Trump would look to lead strongly with 200 votes, but if all of Trump's voters base are that 200 he's gonna be nothing once the full 1,000 are being counted.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThat assumes that cooperating doesn't put either your life, your family or your livelihood in danger. Also considering that police are regularly able to get away with murder in the US I don't see why one woudl think suing them would work.
Plus why should police who are doing illegal things be treated differently? Because I'm pretty sure the standard advise when someone tries to do something illegal to your isn't "do what they say and sue them later".

@ TerminusEst: Same here; any out-of-the-ordinary use of force and Police Regulator automatically gets called in, even if one shot is fired.
