Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Eh, with politicians, being called "Fascist" isn't so much an occupational hazard as it is an occupational certainty.
With Trump-I don't think he'd be offended. He doesn't seem to care much what other people think.
Leviticus 19:34Attacks on Trump from any direction solidify his base of support precisely because he is the candidate of the people who have felt disenfranchised by both mainstream parties. They are under a constant siege mentality; having their leader figure impugned merely reinforces their belief system.
They've been raised on Fox News style propaganda about how liberals and minorities are the cause of all their problems, they keep voting for leaders who promise that lowering taxes and killing regulations will improve their lives, yet they see their lives getting worse and their political power being eroded. That the GOP's policies are responsible for this is something they are unable to recognize due to the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
Trump feels like their savior.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Quote a friend of a friend on FB, in response to a high ranking republican saying he should be disqualified from being president.
Those who are still loyal don't care what he says. Anything short of declaring himself an atheist wouldn't be likely to sway that.
EDIT- A- I'm leaving "unsure emoticon" as copy-paste left it, I find that funny.
Also, halp. how 2 quote block.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Christianity is very Serious Business here to a rather crazy extent.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas Edison@Field Marshal Fry It's not the US as a whole, but Trump's remaining base is pretty much all far-right christian types, who have a...let's say interesting take on the teachings of Christ, but are very much dedicated to that belief, and don't like different religions much, much less none at all.
I'm baaaaaaackRemember the rules against mixing Church and state weren't put in just to protect the Church, it was also to protect the state from being hijacked by religious fundamentalists. The fact that such a thing was needed says a lot, though the fac that you guys never had a true religious reign of terror like much of Europe did may be why you've never gotten past your religious hangups.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranTrump cannot be barred from the election by the government; there is no Constitutional mechanism for doing this. Heck, we've had convicted felons run for (and win) offices while they were in prison. That said, the RNC could attempt to block him out of the nomination process; that has no Constitutional requirements attached to it and the RNC is not a government body, anyway.
Hypothetically, if Trump were to be nominated (or seek an independent run) and win, his electors could defect and vote for someone else. That's never happened, but it could be thought of as the last bastion of defense against a truly horrible candidate.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Even if he wins the Presidency, he can still be impeached if he pisses off Congress enough.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Based on how down-ticket races generally align with the Presidential race, if Trump gets in office, we'll have GOP supermajorities in both the House and Senate and there will be no possibility of impeaching him for at least two years.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Heck, a Secret Service agent might slip a cyanide pill into his nightcap.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There is one way to ban Trump from running for office, revoke his US citizenship... The he'd be ineligible.
Still you guys are weird, felons can't vote, but they can dam sure run? What is it with you lot?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranBelieve it or not, felon voting is controlled at the state level; there is no Federal or Constitutional law on the subject. Similarly, states could bar felons from being on a ballot if they want, but the Federal government cannot. It is also not clear to me what reasoning or mechanism could be used to justify revoking his citizenship, short of a conviction for treason.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I just don't see that an interview with a British host would actually damage Trump with his very American audience that's likely to dismiss anyone that's in any way foreign who criticizes him.
