Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Call me crazy but I think we should just turn over the election of our leaders to the bald eagles. Clearly they have a better sense about these things then we do.
We could even make a ritual out of it: We build a large, grand hall. We fill it with eagles and for our presidential elections we have the candidates walk through this hall, if they are unworthy the eagles will sense this and they will attack, if one of the candidates makes it through unscathed then the eagles have spoken and we will have our new president.

- not clear what you're asking for
- about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not responsible for
- about something that’s the responsibility of a devolved body (eg the Scottish Parliament)
- about a purely personal issue
- confidential, libellous, false or defamatory
- contains language that may cause offence, or is provocative or extreme in its views deceptive or misleading
- advertising or spam
- nonsensical, or a joke
- party political
- about honours or appointments – there’s a different way to nominate someone for an honour
- breaks the law or violates intellectual property rights
- covered by a court order, injunction or is about a case that’s active in the UK courts
- potentially confidential, commercially sensitive or might cause someone distress or financial loss
- names people working in public bodies (except for senior management)
- names family members of elected officials or people working in public bodies
- names someone who has been accused of a crime, or contains information that may identify them
- a Freedom of Information (FOI) request – there’s a different way to make an FOI request
I'd like to point out that what Trump said about there being places in London he wouldn't go because Muslim terrorists bullshit was said some months ago by other Republicans before he joined the debate. (I think before they all started campaigning.)
It was called out as bullshit then but apparently everyone's forgotten that and now find it vastly shocking that anyone would say that. The precedent has been set, and not just by Trump.
The Swiss have guns because they're first stepping stone in a theoretical Russian invasion of the West. They're there so they survive more than a couple days in WW3.
We have guns because we hate minorities and wanna play cowboy.
Oh really when?![]()

Exactly. Icelanders keep ending up on top of various statistic lists because we're tiny enough that it's easy for us to have proportionally high results. You could say there might be proportionally a lot of guns in Iceland compared to the populace, but the average Icelander does not own a gun, isn't interested in owning a gun, and probably wouldn't know where to look to find a gun. Using Iceland as evidence for this "nobody gets attacked if everyone has access to guns" argument is just plain ludicrous nonsense.

X5 It's 14th/13th (depending on what you do with the Swiss) for guns per capita, though admittedly that's on a list where there's lots of margin of error for low scoring countries in certain areas (Africa and Latin America in particular) to actually be much higher.
X3 The Swiss numbers are actually pretty low if you don't count the militia weapons that aren't equipped with ammo in the home.

"Yup. That tasted purple."Fox News also (infamously) said something similar once about Paris
.
Fox News also said the city where I live was off limits to white people.

"Yup. That tasted purple."The Ku Klux Klan is using Donald Trump as a talking point in its outreach efforts.
I think that about speaks for itself...
Rachel Maddow reported last night on how the Republican candidates are all desperately dancing around the question of whether to actively condemn Trump for his statements. Contrary to what seems to have been reported, most of them have yet to issue a definitive statement about it, and all have indicated that they would "support whoever is the eventual nominee", without any sort of "except Trump" qualifier.
It is clear that the entire body of candidates is scared shitless of Trump's voters — of what might happen if he left the party and took them with him.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"but the average Icelander does not own a gun, isn't interested in owning a gun, and probably wouldn't know where to look to find a gun.
Technically, that's mostly true of the median US resident too. We have a lot of guns, but they're concentrated among about a third of the population.

Scotland, at least, wasted no time revoking Trumps membership to GlobalScot and that honorary degree he got from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen
