The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Just saw a headline that Trump is warning of running as an independent if the Republican establishment tries to push him out.

I hope he doesn't. First off it would mean we have to endure his stupidity for longer. Second it would probably cause the Republicans to throw a fit about how they would have won otherwise.
I think it's generally agreed that Trump going Independent will guarantee Clinton's victory thanks to the resulting split in conservative votes.

EDIT: Earlier I compared Trump to a Dalek but I'm starting to realize he's what would happen if Eric Cartman were running for President. He ingratiates himself into the group, they get fed up with his racism, at which point he declares "Screw you guys, I'm going home." by running as an Independent.

CARTMAN: Being independent is perfect. I can tell all the truth I want without having to give a damn about those Party assholes!

Had South Park done an ep about Trump in the election yet?

[up]I know but then people will bitch about how Hillary would have lost if Trump hadn't won.

[up][up]That's actually Mr. Garrison's platform. He's mad as hell, and he's not going to take it anymore.

I am not sure that counts as "too serious".

Unless he actually suffers economically, he is just going to shrug it off.

He's not going to care, no, nor is he likely to actually be banned from visiting Britain. But the USA's greatest ally making clear we won't have anything to do with them if he gets elected is a very bad sign for them.

Trump doesn't care for that either and neither will his voters, though. It would take mass, contagious insanity for him to get elected and before he gets elected, an insane zombified reagan would stumble through the white house, steal crazy obama's nuclear suitcase and jam zombie george bush' head through the button, so we'd be fucked even before trump ever got into office

No-one thinks its weird that this is what people consider going 'too far'? It just seems like a strange place to draw the line considering previous statements Trump has made

No, sane people have been saying it stupid and going too far for months now. This is even the insane people realizing it.

In fairness most of Trump's other statements have been condemned, this time it was just big enough to gain international attention, in part due to the accusations he levelled against cities in other countries.

I wonder if countries could shop for other billionaires to come invest in their country and then promptly dropkick Trump from whatever investments he might have.

That would be an... interesting solution.

You could guarantee that Trump would run third party if he felt like someone was deliberately sabotaging his campaign somehow. And hell, if it was third-party international billionaires, he'd even have a point.

Donald Trump, fundraiser for terrorists.

Donald Trump attended a Sinn Féin fundraising dinner in New York just months before the party’s allies in the Provisional IRA ended its ceasefire with a massive terror attack in London’s Canary Wharf district.

[...]

For decades, Sinn Féin and the IRA were the political and military wings of the Irish republican movement, and the party was frequently accused of being an apologist for terror.

[...]

On his way to the New York fundraiser a few months earlier, Trump would have seen a group of demonstrators protesting ongoing IRA violence, including victims of the 1993 Shankill bomb massacre in which 10 people died.

There were also protests from the relatives of Catholics who had been shot, beaten and exiled by the IRA even after the organisation declared its first ceasefire on 31 August 1994.

I'm convinced Trump can win the Republican primary. It's just a question of whether he'll win the general.

Of course, things could still happen in either direction.

If he loses, it will be for want of a ground game. I could see something like The Simpsons episode "Simpson v Prince" where Bart is vastly more popular than Martin, but Bart's voters were all of the too-cool-for-school cast and didn't actually vote, so Martin won, 2 votes to 0.

Unless Democratic turnout is massively depressed (and a Trump ticket would likely do the opposite), Trump can't take the general. His numbers among Latinos alone make winning certain swing states almost impossible, and that's not getting into everyone else he's pissed off. And given that 20-25% of Republicans have said that they will not vote Trump no matter what, its not looking too scary on that front.

Now if Clinton screws up on a level not seen since Walter Mondale, then you can start to panic/flee the country/etc. But Trump's angry far-right demographic isn't big enough to counter the wide coalition of people who will oppose him. The GOP doesn't have room to grow on the right, and Trump can't take much from the center, will likely lose some of the center-right and will send the center-left and the left into the arms of the Democratic ticket, even if said ticket is Vomit/Dog Crap.

Trump won't just lose the center-right, he'll lose the right to Clinton with the shit he's pulling.

While people in the Republican party have been saying they fundamentally disagree with Trump, to the best of my knowledge, no one elected at federal office has said that if he won the nomination they would not support his candidacy.

Of course they can't do that yet, but I'm sure it will start to happen as we get closer to the first primaries and the nomination itself. Everyone is hoping that they don't have to be the one to take the hit from Trump's voter base that will inevitably ensue. There is something of a Taking the Bullet effect associated with criticizing him.

Representative David Jolly of Florida called for Trump to withdraw from the campaign yesterday on the House floor, so it's not true that no elected Republican representatives have disavowed Trump.
