Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So make Italian day and leave the pillager of Hispaniola out of it.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@Genovese!Columbus: Of course, the Catalans claim him for themselves.
I can grab slices without any of the toppings falling off and your dough is too thin!

Inter arma enim silent legesIt's my understanding that we didn't even have Columbus day until the group called The Knights of Columbus made a huge, concerted push for it. Most people didn't even care at all about it. But now it's got the weight of tradition and some people would fight to keep it, even if it's not a significant part of our heritage. (Hell, he discovered the Caribbean and South America, not really North America.)
And this year weren't some people calling it Native Peoples day or something and celebrating that instead?
Most Central and South American nations do nto celebrate Columbus day, but celebrate something like "Native populations day" or "Day of the races"
And yeah, North America, particularly the U.S States, were kinda not given too many fucks about until later.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesMaybe "Explorers' Day". I don't know, anything but that marauder.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well if they would, that'd be great, but it seems a bit unlikely that they'd ever make it a holiday. "Just make another day" is easier said than done. That's why naive groups want to change it to native people's day, they know fighting to create their own day would be much more difficult.
I'd like to see an explorers day.

Maybe Immigrants Day? Yeah, that would fly well in the current political atmosphere.

No one denies that. The issue is having a day celebrating him.
There are many important historical figures that really don't deserve a day named after them. I'm sure you can find some other examples without even resorting to Godwin's Law.
