Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Reading the Republican anti-Trump memo
posted a few pages back, I must say, I get serious "Gil Fullbright" vibes there. Don't know who he is? A satirical fake political candidate who appears in videos mocking the political process.
The part about hanging out with people and trying to do their job just gave me immediate flashbacks to one of Fullbright's videos mocking how politicians briefly hang out with people on the job just to pose.
I especially love the part where it says this: Trump has risen because voters see him as authentic, independent, direct, firm, —- and believe he can’t be bought. These are the same character traits our candidates should be advancing in 2016.
I doubt the other Republican candidates are seen as "authentic", "independent", "direct" or "firm", or that they "can't be bought". Good luck "advancing" those character traits! Indeed, the way the other candidates get pulled further to the right by Trump makes them look anything but authentic, independent or firm.
There's also that, yes. If you extend the "too soon" period out long enough, then it extends indefinitely as new shootings happen.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Reports are that Farook was a U.S. citizen, so those "Pakistani on a visa" people need to stuff it.
Also, this case is not really a model for gun control or gun rights advocates, since the weapons were all bought legally and this man was, prior to the shooting, exercising his second amendment rights like any other red-blooded American.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Exactly. If you play the Too Soon card after every shooting, you'll have successfully put off any and all action.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There have been 1,052 mass shootings in the past 1,066 days.
There is no bodies are cool enough time. There is literally no down time. At some point we need to just do something other than make sad faces at things.
I don't see how, unless Trump decides to exterminate all Muslims in America, concentration camp style.

Inter arma enim silent legesScared people vote for extremist candidates. If radical Islamic terrorism hits its stride in this country between now and next November, President Trump is not impossible.

He really doesn't like Pakistan, it was more of a joke related to previous threads.
Edit: If I may post about something else for a bit.
How Much Should We Judge Lincoln on Race?
We should certainly not put him in the same category as Wilson. Even for his time Wilson was bad, expanding segregation in the Federal government. Actions speak louder than words or views, and Lincoln without a doubt bettered the situation of blacks in this country, and may have done more if he wasn't killed, whereas Wilson made things worse.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Just when I think Trump cannot get more Hitlerish he proves me wrong.
I've been thinking on the exact logistics needed for such a mission - the only way to decimate Daesh in such a way would be an operation totally disregarding the people held in Daesh's major cities and bombing all the population centers of the ISIS group, as well as corresponding surrounding areas. The hunter killer units could be used to hunt down and kill businessmen doing business with and for Daesh.
The campaign would need to be fast and relatively unannounced.
The attack would need to be complimented by a cyber strike aimed at disrupting the group's Wi Fi and internet access, preventing fast coordination.
I do not really care for such policies myself. But if such a thing was to be done, this is basically how it would happen at the most ruthless and without care for lives.

Do you think that could happen because of this? Maybe we should panic after all.
