Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pretty sure he meant appalling, but he does need to watch his spelling a bit.
At this point it doesn't seem like we'll get anything really substantial. Did they manage to catch one of the guys? My mom seems to think one shooter survived and got taken to the hospital while I wasn't watching the news.

That's kind of like asking who gets military grade hardware and shoots up a place, man. If there was a party going on the timing might have just been because they knew people were going to be there, or a coincidence and the place was a target regardless.

The police have just held a press conference. There were two suspects killed by police after they fled a home that they were apparently holed up in. It was one male and one female. Husband/wife team?
Edit: A third suspect was seen leaving the scene and was detained.

Not much. Many Americans view things like this as "the price of Freedom." But last time something like 90 percent of people polled supported him, and he still couldn't get his plan past Congress. The NRA may have weakened between now and then though. Plus it is an election year. Anyone want to bet Clinton will relay hammer Sanders home on guns after this.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Hmm. We are now hearing that the person who left the party in that office may have been the one who came back with an accomplice and attacked it. Two military-style assault rifles and two pistols were recovered.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Officers are now at a location that may be the home of one of the suspects.
Frankly, it would not be out of character for some militia jackhole to be at a party, get pissed off at something, and come back to shoot it up.

Well, constitutions get modified all the time. If here in Europe we've managed to outlaw and/or lock-up a few groups of far-right and far-left extremists, then American can certainly detain a bunch of toxic gun nuts.
While wearing a bullerproof vest? Why would they see a need for that?

I'm still waiting for that "extreme skepticism" you supposedly had to kick back in.
Seriously, I would like to know who these people are, and why they weren't on a FBI watchlist or something.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)CNN obtained a recording of the police radio chatter during the street battle. It's almost surreal. The police immediately knew they had taken out two suspects and thought that someone had fled the scene. We've been hearing that the third person may not actually be involved and could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Totemic Hero: Funny thing: being on a terror watchlist doesn't prevent you from buying guns. Thanks, NRA!
Anyway, it's obvious that their tactics were too deliberate to have been a spur-of-the moment revenge thing, but they did target this party specifically, so they must have been casing it.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It was a holiday party for the local Department of Health, or some such. That's part of what makes this so bizarre: there is no obvious reason for it to have been selected for violence.

Hey, I'm just passing the news along; I didn't say I thought it all that plausible.
At least it confirms what was going on in that conference room. But who targets a Christmas party anyway?
